Default Learning about Engines/ Rebuilding

Anybody into old cars, fixing them up and rebuilding engines? I had a neighbor as kid who was a few years older who than me training to be a mechanic- he used his parents garage to rebuild an engine in an old Chevy Cutlass... i hung with him for a few weeks at night when he was working on this, should have paid way more attention and learned a lot more.

Anybody into this kind of stuff? I'd like to begin to learn, but can't really justify an academic program and don't have the flexible schedule to attend a lot of classes.

Looking for a lead in on a place to start I guess... love to tinker and figure out how to fix/ build things...

Are you looking to do it for a living or as a hobby? If you want to make it a career a formal education is almost a must have now a days. If it's a hobby, buy something you like and pick the most needed project and start on it. With the internet there are all kinds of forums, YouTube videos etc. Like all forums take the advise with a grain of salt, but the answers are out there. If it's not your daily driver you can take as long as you need to get it right.

With 35 years as a mechanic I can say for sure none of it is brain surgery. The computer control stuff takes some knowledge but patience is generally the key to good workmanship.

Back in the day, this was the great thing about VWs: You and a pal could take out the engine, set it on the lawn, do a valve job, and put it back in.

Someone that knows how to work on this machine please PM me. I love it but it’s so damn temperamental, and mechanics take one look and get scared.

Awesome machine though.

Want to learn to tinker around on a car? It's called youtube, that's where you'll learn some stuff. Seriously, try it.

edit. Seriously, if you want to learn to work on gas engines, remember some basic stuff, for example, the more cylinders, the more complicated the engine. If I was you, I'd go buy an old motorcycle and start wrenching on it. Buy an owner's manual (interwebz) and/or a service manual (interwebz). Then, if you want to learn how to wrench on it, start fixing things on it. If it's an old Harley, you'll have many, many things to constantly fix on it. If it's an old Japanese bike, you'll always be able to find things to wrench on. Maybe turn it into a cafe racer?

Anyhow, if you have a garage, the time, patience, energy and $ (you'll need tools, etc.,) you can easily learn how to wrench on a bike, and then move on to wrenching on a car. Again, remember that the more wheels and the more cylinders a bike or car has, the more complicated it will be (and expensive) to work on it.
