Default Seattle caves on Amazon and Starbucks tax

Amazon and Starbucks give the middle finger to the affordable housing and homeless tax.

Seattle poised to repeal new tax opposed by Amazon

SEATTLE (AP) ó Seattle leaders said Monday that they plan to repeal a tax on large companies like Amazon and Starbucks as they face mounting pressure from businesses, an about-face just a month after unanimously approving the measure to help pay for efforts to combat a growing homelessness crisis.

The quick surrender showed the power of Amazon to help rally opposition and aggressively push back on taxes at all levels of government, even in its affluent home city where the income gap is ever widening and lower-income workers are being priced out of housing. It has resulted in one of the highest homelessness rates in the U.S.

Amazon and other businesses had sharply criticized the tax, and the online retailer even temporarily halted construction planning on a new high-rise building near its Seattle headquarters ahead of the vote.

It marks the latest Amazon move against city, state and national taxes.

So, instead of companies like Amazon and Sprawl-Mart subsidizing the serfs, you and your fellow tax payers will continue to do it.

Winning!

I dislike the leadership at Amazon and Starbucks, but good for them. How would eliminating local jobs and raising prices for the consumer (the net results) help the area?

Why should Seattle businesses subsidize government policy of coddling the homeless? Not like most of that money would ever reach the homeless anyway due to all the "non-profit" leeches who "administer" the money.

As for the people who are getting priced out, they will move elsewhere like locusts and vote for the same dumb chit they left behind.

Amazon holds local government and municipalities hostage for tax incentives and other favorable policies. They will never pay their fair share especially when it comes to impact fees on infrastructure to support their facilities and employees to get to and from work.

Yeah...I dream of being homeless so I can be "coddled" like the people I see sleeping under bridges and eating lunch out of dumpsters. God I hate how we've been propping these "leeches" up in the non-profit world. Every non-profit worker I know is driving a Benz and wearing a Rolex. Most of the homeless wear Rolex's too...just goes to show you what a great country this is eh?

****ing idiot.

You'd rather subsidize these companies' labor forces with your own tax dollars than ask multi-billion dollar corporations to shoulder the burden.

Doesn't get much more idiotic than that.

Wrong, let the tax payers that choose to live in a liberal infested sanctuary city like Seattle pay more taxes to support theses local government handouts.

Large corporations provide jobs and pay taxes for infrastructure, public utilities, law enforcement and education.

Itís a simple fix, double the local tax rate on the citizens of Seattle and see how long these programs exist.

"Hostage?"

"You're going to pay an employment tax to help all the people you don't employ!" said no rational economic development policy ever.

My tax dollars arenít going to shoulder the burden of Seattle liberal government programs. Seattle like all cities receives federal tax dollars and if they choose to speed it on low cost housing and the homeless thatís fine with me.

Ummm that employment tax that the company pays is for fed taxes the employee bares the burden of the state income tax.

The local cities and municipalities get screwed as Amazon does not pay their fair share of costs upfront. The municipality has to make it up but imposing incremental taxes on their residents so the true cost is passed on to everyone else (not just amazon employees).

I can attest to how corporations how local and even state governments hostage as my former employer did it for 20 years in Fairfield CT before eventually leaving for Boston when they didn't get their way.

I also started my career working for a county economic development agency in Florida. I saw from the ground level how the whole thing works and what inefficiencies it creates. I can also attest to how sports stadiums have a similar impact as we (our county) funded 3 spring training baseball stadiums that put our infrastructure into chaos at certain parts of "season".

1) The problem isn't confined to "liberal" cities.

2) More often than not, these corporations pay few or no taxes after exploiting all the loopholes available to them.

3) People who work for these companies are increasingly being priced out of the housing markets in their local communities. Instead of asking these companies to pay their workers better wages, you're happy to force the workers into dependence on public assistance - and fund those public programs with your own tax dollars. (Your beloved Sprawl-Mart is the paradigm example.)

Talk about living a contradiction in the service of an already-discredited ideology.

The problem isn't confined to Seattle.

Your tax dollars support welfare programs for Sprawl-Mart workers because you're ideologically opposed to asking Sprawl-Mart to pay their workers a living wage.

Have you not heard about Seattle's new policy of "Tax employment to help the unemployed" program?

Federal taxes have nothing to do with it.

As I understand it, they already had enough signatures for the citizen petition to do a ballot initiative repeal of this nonsense anyway. It was just a matter of time before it was rightly erased.

I, for one, am sad it was repealed only because now Seattle will not be able to demonstrate to the world, again, just how inept and destructive socialism is.

Huh it was a good idea 60 to 90 days ago and now it's not. I mean the measure passed with a unanimous vote just a few months ago. All of a sudden it's 7:2 against. It's almost like career politicians or the political aspirations of people on the council ruled the day.

The whores on their city council have no backbone or principal.

Apparently not. Still have yet to read anything to convince me that the solution to unemployed homelessness is to tax jobs.
