How can you blame them, with all the mental problems ex-players are having these days, I wouldn't play more then 10 years either.

Cortland Finnegan retires. Good, solid career. It seems like the league is transitioning in a big way with young guys retiring and such.

Still can't believe Worilds retired. He was just hitting his prime.

Mr. Tebow finds this situation ironic.

@NEPD_Loyko: Julius Thomas "looks set to leave Denver" and Terrence Knighton all but gone. That's what happens when you go "all in" for one year

Uh, we've been pretty much "all in" for 3 years. And top 5 favorites for every one.

I'm glad to see some players doing this. Play a few years and make a few million (or more) and get out before your body is ravaged and you're set for life.

If enough players start doing this, it may force the NFL to really take the concussion/CTE stuff and other player safety issues seriously.

Doubtful.

And, in at least some recent cases like this one, it seems like the injuries that are forcing guys to retire early are not head-related.

I doubt it. Plenty of players to fill limited roster spots.

I guess when you don't go "all in" you, God forbid, become the Kansas City Chiefs!

Guys are missing tons of time due to concussions nowadays where they used to just go right back in. What else do you want them to do? Seems like they are taking it seriously to me.

There are reports and studies of helmets developed that provide better protection but the NFL chooses to ignore them and the theory is that because they are rather hideous looking and they're afraid that would turn fans (and advertisers) off big time.

The almighty buck is always #1 with the NFL. The illusion of the NFL looking out for the health of their players with these concussion protocols and unnecessary roughness pelanties is working. They have to attack the problem at the source.

I'd rather they go back to leather/no helmets than see them move to those bobble-head clown helmets.

This kind of comment is exactly why they continue to use the current helmet.

In any case, it's good to see some players hang it up while they're still healthy and not having to painfully watch them struggle in their final years.

It will be noticed if more popular players like Patrick Willis start doing it.

with the leather helmet, those guys are not going to use their helmet to hit anymore.

Fear of change?

That swings both ways in this argument.

And it may not be as simple as it seems. Larger helmets may prevent some concussions, but increase neck injuries, for instance.

I'm all for improvements in the current (or close to it) form factor. Once you go outside of that, there are more questions than answers.
