Default Whisk(e)y

Do you like whiskey? I do. After playing in beer since my post-Mormon journey, I've discovered, and come to truly appreciate the wonder that is usquebaugh or "water of life." and while I prefer a smokey scotch, I like bourbon and Irish as well. My friends and I even have started compiling a spreadsheet we share on google docs comparing ratings, price and looking at variances (see below).

I like it because I sip it and enjoy it more. And I have actually lost weight because I drink fewer calories than when I'm having a couple of stouts or porters.

I'm particularly fond of sherry cask finished drams. What say you, Bronco fans?

I LOVE Buffalo Trace, despite broheims calling it "B-Trace!" it's actually quite excellent and it is very inexpensive. You don't need to spend a ton of money to enjoy whiskey, especially bourbon.

I also like Bulleit Rye. I haven't tried many of the more expensive ones yet.

Kaylore is getting into booze about 15 years after most people do. I used to be a big whiskey guy but it gets to where it starts to kick your ass and do stupid ****. I still drink some High West Whiskey and some Beam/Jack in small doses.

definately makes you crazy in large amounts, I also used to be a big get drunk and crazy, now i dont really get hammered anymore and try to just have 1 whiskey to enjoy the taste and light buzz. Same with craft beers, i try to have 1-3 just to enjoy, and a small buzz.

So on Rye, Colorado's own A.D. Laws distillery, which I had the fortune of touring, just won Gold at the World Whiskey Awards for best American Rye for their Secale Straight Rye Bottled in Bond.

I bought a bottle. I'm not super into Rye, but this is excellent.

You'll have to go blended. But this one is absolutely awesome:

I like it better than The Dalmore 12.

Big time. I used to be a big scotch drinker, but the last 4 or 5 years have been pretty devoted to Ryes and Burbouns. Some favorites:

Bourbons
Four Roses - one of the best cheap bourbons you can buy and their Small Batch and Single Barrel are fantastic

Redemption - it's relatively inexpensive and really good on ice

Buffalo Trace - always great and used to be a lot less expensive than it is now

Rowan's Creek - it's a little bit sweeter than I normally like but it has some nice spice to it. It's really easy to sip but be careful because it's 100 proof.

Ryes
Bulleit Rye - It's a pretty distinct and all around great Rye that I could easily pick out with a blindfold on. R0easonably priced.

Templeton Rye - My go to when I'm willing to spend a little extra

Alberta Rye Dark Batch - Blended Canadian Rye, I can't explain this one, you just have to try it. Might be too sweet for some Rye drinkers but I think it's fantastic.

Scotches

Lagavulin + Laphroaig
I want it Peaty as **** or it's not worth my time. Pretty much only 2 that cover it for me.

I will say that I haven't had too much in the way of Japanese Whiskey due to the price point, but in general I have been really impressed with most of the ones I've tried.

When you start dabbling in rums, give me a shout I have a lot of suggestions there as well.

Thats looks awesome. I will have to try. Money is tight now with my wife not working so buying whiskey is last on our list of expenses. I do have a lot of Jack and Jim leftover from gifts and past holidays. You ever do those neat or on the rocks? I havent yet, just with coke.

For some reason I hated Four Roses. But I really like Evan Williams, especially their 1783. Bourbon is a lot like wine, where there is not correlation between expense and taste.

I love the Islay whiskies as well. I am currently working on a Laphroaig Quarter Cask. It's good, not amazing, but good.

I need to get into Canadian. Not much experience there, unfortunately.

Nope, whiskey is not for me, I've had me share of shots in the past but it was mostly to going along with the crowd/friends. Really the only whiskey I can drink and enjoy is Southern Comfort with a cherry coke if you call that whiskey drinking, lol. I'm a totally craft beer drinker now usually something with a 7% ABV or higher.

I mostly have them neat or with water. The Scotch master blenders will tell you to bring it to about 35% ABV to really enjoy it. But there are some I'll enjoy over a death star ice ball my wife got me for Christmas.

I like my smokey scotches with these, sometimes. I tend to take my Irish neat, because their flavor profile is more delicate and light and the water isn't needed for me.

He has some big steps to fill! I love your trip reports and he has to reach his buddy REV's Vegas blowouts that has banned him supposedly(even though he would never say why when pressed on it)!
