The Cardinals need above-average defenders. Defense let them down last season and their pitching staff performed below their talent level.

Cardinals have been in 4 of the past 12 World Series, winning two.

Reasonable level of success.

Kind of a heyward/Fowler switch. I hope Fowler can top heywards .565 ops.

Agreed. Fowler in CF for them helps alleviate some defensive issues.

Looking back, the return the Rockies, got in the Fowler trade was pathetic. Thanks again, Dan O'Dowd! Your 64-year tenure here was an unmitigated success.

O'Dowd was Hawkins at CU level horrendous in his tenure.
Maybe even Layden with the Knicks level horrendous.

That's a good way to describe it. Maybe I'd add Josh-McDaniels-with-the-Broncos horrendous. And it just went on and on and on. So far, I like Bridich. He at least has a strategy, other than "throw as much **** as possible against the wall, and hope that some of it sticks."

It's bad when you look back at the era and you can find evidence to make it worse than your memory initially recalled.

My preference for the Rockies would have been Edwin Encarnacion, but he might have priced himself out of what Colorado was willing to pay.

They are indeed a contender. I also feel the traditional stats because of Coors hide the true value and ability of Jon Gray. He's the real deal.
Love Gray. Iíve seen a lot of Desmond against the Mets...heís a good player. At worst, heíll provide a steady vet presence and hit 25 homers in Coors. 12 million a year is no biggie to me, especially when youíre the Rox and you canít really attract players on even offers. You all should be thrilled, theyíre spending dough and making smarter choices overall. Nothing better than watching a baSeimiant MLB team get over the hump and start winning again. Screw being a Yankees fan...I love the ups and downs.

God the Otani posting is gonna be a once in a lifetime event. Still gonna do the blind bid thing? Wow...someoneís throwing 200 mil in just to talk to him. What position will he play? Can he stay a two-way guy? Holy smokes...canít wait.

Cap is 20 mil on the posting fee, he'd be under a minor league deal initially.

1. Several other big market teams will still be limited by the international spending penalties. The Yankees are currently riding out the second year of the penalties associated with their 2014-15 international spending spree. They were limited to $300,000 maximum bonuses during both the 2015-16 and 2016-17 signing periods. Come the 2017-18 signing period, the one Otani will count against next offseason, theyíre free to spend again.

Other big market teams are not so lucky. The penalties do carry over to the next CBA ó you didnít think MLB would let those teams get away easy, did you? ó which means the Athletics, Astros, Braves, Cardinals, Cubs, Dodgers, Giants, Nationals, Padres, Reds, and Royals will all still be dealing with the penalties from their recent international spending sprees. They canít offer Otani more than $300,000. Right off the bat, potential suitors like the contending Astros, Cardinals, Cubs, Dodgers, Giants, and Nats are out of the race. The Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Tigers, Mariners, and Rangers will be the only traditional big market clubs not subject to the $300,000 limit.

I'm curious to see how much Otani's rival Fujinami goes for. He's also 22 like Otani but he has not shown the desire to pitch in the MLB like Sho has.

More and more players getting those NTC's in their contracts. Can't say I blame them, teams love to trade them for prospects early on if it doesn't go well.

Still cannot believe Holliday's only NTC team is the A's, he must have loathed the stadium conditions.

So it boils down to who he wants to sign with? Everyone will be offering the same thing (those unpenalized teams).

He is close friends with Tanaka and works out with him, he wanted to skip playing in the Nippon all together and play in the majors, the Yankees have been connected to him since he was 18, the Sox as well.

My guess would be it will come down to The Yankees, Red Sox and Rangers given their history of signing Japanese pitchers and doing well with them.
The Mariners aren't as big of a threat since they are well... the Mariners.
The Tigers are slashing payroll and the Blue Jays are operating under the Cleveland Indians model of payroll restraint.

If the Dodgers weren't capped I would say they were the biggest threat to the Yankees.

I don't personally think there is a chance in hell that Otani spends a day in the minors but that is just my personal opinion, he's a now player.

If we could get Martes and Tucker that would be great. Really need an OF talent like the latter. Adding another high quality arm would be nice too. If Coop can develop all these guys, it would be an awesome rotation in a few years.

I'm really happy for Dexter. Despite the fact that he only played here for a little over five seasons (still well over half of his MLB career) - to this date, while I have to leave Larry Walker at the top of the "DomCasual's All-Time Favorite Rockies (DCATFR, for short)" list, Dexter would definitely be in the top five.. Obviously I don't know him, personally, but I get the sense that he's a really likeable guy in the clubhouse. And I know it sounds a little strange, but the guy's got a likeable face. He just always looks happy, man.

And he just looks so goofy. How could you look at this guy (below are photos with every stop he's made in the majors - you could say I have a bit of a man crush on him, and I probably wouldn't deny it), and say, "Man, I can't stand that Dexter Fowler?" He looks like someone who could take horrible news, and still figure out a way to laugh about it. Last offseason, he turns down a 3 year, $35 million deal with the Orioles, and bets on himself with a one year deal with the Cubs. It worked out for him to the tune of a World Championship, and a 5 year, $82 million deal in an absolutely great baseball town. Sometimes, good karma just seems to work for you.

I wanted Fowler on the Yankees a few years ago. Hell, if we could broom Ellsbury, I wouldn't mind him on the Yankees now.

White Sox about to tear dat ass up again. Robertson is about the only legitimate closer option left. They wanted him in the Eaton trade but the Sox held on.

Nationals... y vey:
