Default A Warning from Europe: The Worst is Yet to Come

From The Atlantic, this is an exceptional read...and a scathing rebuke of the nativist, nationalistic far-right ideologies that usher in fascism.

The author knows something about this as well...and if you've got any brains, it should scare the **** out of you.

A Warning From Europe: The Worst Is Yet to Come

Polarization. Conspiracy theories. Attacks on the free press. An obsession with loyalty. Recent events in the United States follow a pattern Europeans know all too well.

Quote:
Given the right conditions, any society can turn against democracy.

Indeed, if history is anything to go by, all societies eventually will.
In a famous journal he kept from 1935 to 1944, the Romanian writer Mihail Sebastian chronicled an even more extreme shift in his own country. Like me, Sebastian was Jewish; like me, most of his friends were on the political right. In his journal, he described how, one by one, they were drawn to fascist ideology, like a flock of moths to an inescapable flame. He recounted the arrogance and confidence they acquired as they moved away from identifying themselves as Europeans—admirers of Proust, travelers to Paris—and instead began to call themselves blood-and-soil Romanians. He listened as they veered into conspiratorial thinking or became casually cruel. People he had known for years insulted him to his face and then acted as if nothing had happened. “Is friendship possible,” he wondered in 1937, “with people who have in common a whole series of alien ideas and feelings—so alien that I have only to walk in the door and they suddenly fall silent in shame and embarrassment?”

This is not 1937. Nevertheless, a parallel transformation is taking place in my own time, in the Europe that I inhabit and in Poland, a country whose citizenship I have acquired. And it is taking place without the excuse of an economic crisis of the kind Europe suffered in the 1930s. Poland’s economy has been the most consistently successful in Europe over the past quarter century. Even after the global financial collapse in 2008, the country saw no recession. What’s more, the refugee wave that has hit other European countries has not been felt here at all. There are no migrant camps, and there is no Islamist terrorism, or terrorism of any kind.

The parallels are most disheartening.

The trend toward fascism is not only coming from the far right. Indeed, that is a minor part of it. The trend is mainly being fueled by liberals -- who have drunk the imperial kool aide - - and who - like the neocons -- think God meant for the US to be the world's policeman - -and to tell everyone what to do (or else!).

History teaches us that we learn nothing from history.

The 73-year interval from WW II until now has dimmed the memories and diminished the lessons humanity thought it would never forget, but we have forgotten.

In less than two years we have unraveled the 70-year alliances that kept the peace, destroyed the fundamental principles people fought so hard to achieve, eliminated ourselves from contention as a world influence to broker peace and maintain some kind of order. Whatever one thinks of this country, a vacuum in power is ALWAYS filled by the next nation looking to their own interests, and we have acquiesced that responsibility at probably the worst possible time we could.

War is coming. Make no mistake about this. It's coming here, to these shores, probably a civil war as well as terrorism on a scale that Europe and the Middle East have endured for decades, possibly worse. We are NOT prepared on any level for what we are going to face.

Amazing...the richest country on earth...one with the highest level of liberty, deliberately and purposefully destroying themselves from within, eager to embrace fascism and totalitarianism after promoting themselves as the vanguard of liberty for all of their prior existence as a nation. At least Germany had the Great Depression and the slide into economic disaster following WW I to lean on as an excuse of some kind.

What excuse do we have?

All this madness is because we hate those who aren't like us...history will laugh at us forever as the stupidest people who've ever lived on this planet, in spite of our technology and economic power...we are some dumb mother ****ers.

Fortunately, given that America is already a corporate oligarchy, we don't have to worry about the loss of democracy; That ship has sailed. What form of government will best serve its interests? I guess we'll find out.

Democracy is the most difficult government to sustain. The people have to be well educated, they have to believe in its ideals, they have to be committed to it and they have to participate. Our voter turnouts hover at around 50%. In Norway, they regularly hit 80%. In fact, we trail the majority of countries in voter turnout: http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank...ped-countries/

I guess that's why Donald Trump prefers uneducated people. They're stupid enough to buy his ****ing lies. Seems like the best way to take democracy down is fear and lies. Break down the belief. Confuse the electorate with factionalism. Break down the commitment. Reduce the participation. Spread the fear. Sow the doubt. This next election is basically over whether or not the American people would prefer authoritarianism or democracy. A blue vote equals democracy. Simple as that.

Those who have been toying with the idea of authoritarianism need to be shown the door in the most forceful manner possible. Fascism is like the cankers on a rose bush. You just cut off all the offending branches and burn them. Right at the beginning. Otherwise, you lose the rose. Republicans must pay for what they have given birth to and fed these last thirty years. Do it, or kiss this country goodbye.

Reboot.

Republicans prefer uneducated people, it’s the only way to explain Arkville in Kentucky, the joining of church and state in schools, the removal of evolution from texts, removal of Clinton and Keller, and inclusion of Billy Graham by the Texas board of education.

How ****ed is that.

If Inverted Totalitarianism is correct, then democracy will loose its luster for the corporate masters as soon as too many of us wake up and vote our inrterests. (And insist on 100% paper ballots/receipts.)

Democracy has been working great for them for decades - apathy, low voter turnout, the illusion of inclusion, the ease with which they have been able to turn the lower classes against each other based on tribalism..

They (Corporate Masters) will probably turn to single party strongman/puppet regime, with open, in your face oligarchy (i.e. the Russian model).
