Tutorial 1a: The Magic Wand Extraction - The Orange Mane

Step 1: Open your image (I am using the Broncos logo for this example). Important to note on images and magic wand use. It cannot have a lot of varying colors and shades of colors as the magic wand will tend to pick up single colors only. Simplistic images with simplistic shapes and colors are the best images to use when extracting with the magic wand technique.

Step 2: Click on your magic wand tool. (Highlighted below). Now go to your image and click on one of the orange areas of the mane in the logo. Hold down shift and click the next orange area. Repeat until all orange areas have been selected (the eye requires two clicks, one on each side). Press CTRL+X to cut the selected area after all the orange has been selected. Press CTRL+V to paste the orange back in. Then grab your move tool and adjust the orange to fit back into the logo nicely. Repeat steps for the blue outline (dont forget the nose, ear and eye portions of blue). Repeat steps for white interior.

Step 3: You should have three layers: the blue outline, the orange mane and eye and the white interior. You can add filters, layer styles or whatever to each layer and modify the logo however you see fit.

Yea, it's kinda hard to do this with photos because Broncos pants are white and the background colors are too close.

There are two other method's I know of, both are more difficult and rarely as accurate.

Best method is the first one I showed you but this one is much much easier for things of this nature and it is the most accurate.

Well that was a quick one. And an easy one at that. Here is what I just did. Didn't spend but a few minutes with it.

my mouse is crap ... when i try to adjust the cut out stuff i cant move pixel by pixel, it always moves by 2 or 3 ... gonna buy a new one

Probably not your mouse Jens.

Got to Menu: View-->Snap (To?) Might be Snap To

Make sure Snap is unchecked.

Otherwise it snaps layers (and slices, more on that later) to the grid/rule/slices/layers depending on what you have it set to snap to BUT it comes with the default Snap checked.

That would have looked much cooler if you kept the noise to just the blue and left the orange and white alone. The drop shadow makes it stand out and it almost looks three dimensional.

Nevermind, I guess photoshop is simply the type of photo editor installed on your computer and I'm stuck with Microsoft Photo Editor. Anything to help me with that?

Thing is, I didn't use a drop shadow on it. I've tried to duplicate it and I can't. I've gone back to just adding noise to the blue and it doesn't turn out right. Not sure what the hell I did.

No, I started it, but got sidetracked. Its about halfway done and completely forgotten about.

Now that yo mention it though Iwill try to take care of that and mini's tutorial request this weekend.

No promises though.

And mini, I dont have a WIFE or KIDS. I have a girl who has a kid that live with me though.
