Default Brother going to be a highschool QB...any tips?

My brother is entering his freshman year in high school and is going out for the football team. He's about 6'0 and 200 lbs but he's lean, strong and fast. He's also got some experience as a starting QB in midget football where he threw the ball around a little and did well.

Just looking for some things we could do over the summer to get him prepared. Me and him were gonna start working out over the summer and going to the field to work on his fundamentals. Anyone have any tips?

Thanks in advance,
Eric

Footwork drills. I believe either Montana or Marino has a video out there on footwork. And find a good camp or ask the coach about a good football camp. As much time making reads on corners the better.

Does he have any friends that are WR's on the team? I played WR in high school and in the offseason, me and the QB would keep on practicing patterns and such.

Being on the same page with your WR's along with knowing their styles, how fast they are, how well they run patterns among other things will go a long way as a QB.

Get good at handing the ball to the RB because most of the highschool football i've seen the offense is like 80% of the time running the football.

I was a DE and RT. He needs to buddy up with his tackles as they will save his life. And this is going to sound bad but he needs to learn how to properly take a hit and go down without jacking up his shoulders. I broke two guy's coller bones in highschool when it shouldn't have happened. Buy a used thick mattress then practice him getting hit from behind and upfront...it will save him. And teach him to hold onto the ball with two hands...I always grinned when watching video of our opponent and saw the QB hold the ball with one hand.

As far as fundamentals or crap like that...I have no clue as I can't throw worth a damn.

That and center exchanges when the ball is snapped as well, our team always had problems with fumbling those.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Missingnumber - I will look into those videos and try to pick one up.

FADED - He's friends with a couple kids that wanna try out for WR (incoming freshman as well) so who knows if they will actually make it there or not. I will definetly look into getting them together and getting chemistry down.

Majik - I will work on that with him but that is an area he did really well with that when he played midget football. We'll still work on that too.

Rascal - I forgot to mention he also played linebacker and fullback/running back before he went to QB. He's a pretty tough kid and never had injury problems. That is a good suggestion though that I've never heard and may do it so he can get used to being hit as a quarterback.

If he was a RB I wouldn't be concerned about the hits coming from the front, just the back then. I was also going to mention holding on to the ball when getting hit, but since he was a RB that shouldn't be a problem.

see if you can get some of the type of plays for him to look at over the summer. knowing the plays, handing off, and the center exchange are the most important things for a highschool QB. i remember my QB ddn't know the plays, he used to ask us RBs in the huddle who got the ball and where the play went after he called it. also, i remember in my sophomore year we lost a game where we were ahead 6-0 with 12 seconds left and the ball, and we fumbled the snap, and lost 12-6 in OT. but basically work on footwork, handoffs, taking the snap, and maybe get some plays to work on. i hope some of this helps.

Thanks DBroncos31, I'll have to ask the coach if he can get a playbook in advance.

doesn't his HS have like a summer program!? we used to go over QB fundimentals like QB center exchange, passing mechanics, 3 step 5 step drops, handoffs, play fakes then move on to developing with 7 on 7 drills and defensive reads, coverages, and routes!

yeah, i used to have a mini-camp, right after school ended, like 3-7 for a week. then of course we had freakin preseason. oh god, i hated that ****. 9-5, every day, two-a-days for 3 weeks. then school started. but we'd learn the plays and stuff in mini-camp and then work our asses off in preseason. oh...and get your brother to start hitting the weight room, if he hasn't already. i could have been awesome if i had lifted more.

Unfortunately they really don't have anything for the incoming freshman except for a conditioning program when school starts. Down here in Pinellas County Florida the schools barely have any money for elective classes and they did away with summer school awhile back.

That's the main reason I want to get him started now, if they had a program like that I'd just get him in good shape and let them teach him the fundamentals.

I do like the idea of getting him together with the receivers and getting that chemistry down. He will definetly be hitting the weight room with me this summer.

Thanks, I think he'll do well. What he has going for him is he's a good kid, smart and a team player. Even if he is a little inexperienced this year, I think he'll provide them with good leadership. When he played midget football (the team my dad coached and I was an assistant) he was always one of our hardest workers.

One more for him to practice, especially because it's high school, is throwing the ball accurately on the run.

More often than not in high school, the offensive line breaks down a lot sooner than what you're used to seeing in college or pros(hence why a lot of teams run the ball a lot more), and the QB is forced into either taking the sack or scrambling around.

A QB that can elude a rush and hit his receivers accurately will also go a long way for him.

Yeah he needs to work on that, and I'll help him with that.

Anything he can do to increase arm strength? I thought of getting a bigger football than what they use in high school and have him throw that around so when he goes to the smaller football, it'll feel lighter. Is that a good idea or is there anything else we can do?
