MT. You Really have to WANT to quit if you are going to succeed. Not because you have spots on your teeth if you don't, or fear of the "nasties" that will happen, if you don't, etc. etc..

I am currently quitting and am using the lozenges. They are called COMMIT.
They DO help get over the cravings, and for ME are better than the patch. The patch SLOWLY seeps out a constant stream of nicotine, and the lozenge (or gum) gives you a big hit of nicotine all at once (over a half hour or so), kind of like a cigarette. Since you only smoke lightly they have a 4 and 2 mg (milligram) lozenge . use the 2 Mg.

I am a 42 year smoker at 1-2 packs a day, and I haven't had a smoke in 11 weeks now. I have about 6 of the lozenges a day. (varies depending on stress and situation). I am at the point where I should be weaning myself off the lozenges now, and am worried about that. But even if I use the lozenges for the rest of my life (hopefully not) I'll be beeter off than I would be smoking. No tar and other byproducts into my lungs.

I carried an open pack of cigarettes with me for the first 7 weeks I was using lozenges. The reason was so I couldn't let my ADDICTION fool my ego into thinking I was deprived, and was only not smoking cause I didn't have one handy.

The truth is you have to think of smoking like a recovered alcoholic thinks of drinking. You can NEVER have even ONE smoke, if you really want to stop for good, because you are an ADDICT. And stopping forever is the goal.

If you don't want to go the lozenge/gum route try this.
Take a business card and write down the ten TOP reasons you want to quit, under the heading I AM AN ADDICT!
1. Clean teeth, 2. Better Health, 3. I won't smell bad, 4. No more ruined clothes 5. better sex 6. etc. etc. Whatever drives you.

Put that card inside the wrapper cellophane on your cigarettes.
EVERY time you have a cigarette, stop and READ the entire card. Then have your smoke, if you still want to.
What you will find is that you will start breaking the HABIT of smoking at certain times (going to the store alone) by thinking about it. Hopefully, you put the cigarettes away after reading the card.

I used that method to stop cold turkey for a year about ten years ago. Unfortunately I thought I could try one a year later...and was up to a pack a day within a week. Never forget that you are an addict.

Good luck to both of us.

Thanks, Scott and good luck to you too.

Something that keeps coming up is that I have to want to quit. I do. I just set the braces deadline as a drop dead date for me. I am sick of coughing in the morning, the little wheezy sound that I hear every once in awhile, heinous breath, etc. It all sucks and I very much WANT to do it for me.

I have now made it 24 hours. I know it's not much, but it's a start and I am feeling fine.

Doesn't sound like you have a smoking problem. You have a driving problem. Give it up. That's right. NO DRIVING.

Seriously. And here is the reason. When you are driving you aren't invisible. So when you smoke while you are driving other people can see you doing it. And do you know what those people think when they see you puffing away in your car?

What a dumb b****.

Really, it just isn't cool any more. Most people hate to see young, attractive women smoking. I mean, might as well lick a dirty ashtray instead of kissing them. Same result....

And do you use your car's ashtray? Or are the ashes and butts something you "share" with the public because you don't really want the stink and the mess in your car? That's one of the great attractions about car smokes - easy disposal of the evidence.

Okay enough with the . The real reason to quit? You are too smart to be doing something you know is stoooopid.

Don't take any cigarettes with you when you are getting in the car. If you get antsy, just go through the motions of smoking. Sounds silly, but just the physical sucking in a deep breath and then blowing it out can be calming.

You have a great will and determination. Put those to good use and do something wonderful for yourself!

Two and half days in and I'm still doing fine. It's crossed my mind a time or two, but still not as bad as I had envisioned.

Excellent job, Mt! Very good. Just keep it up. This is a big accomplishment. Slowly but surely, get off those cigarettes. You are hitting the jackpot, your extending your health and life. Big time props. Just keep working at it. Very, very good. Keep it up MT. Excellent news. Excellent.

Drinking is what gets most people when they try to quit. I never started because I watched my grandpa die of it. All my friends do fine tell the get drunk then its puff time.

Ray Finkle hit the nail on the head. Nothing is going work unless YOU WANT TO!!!
I should know, I used to smoke a very long time ago. I quit cold turkey as a new years resolution and never looked back because I wanted to.

How does anyone smoke around family members and they not know it? I would tell instantly.

I got it...MT, you want to quit because you don't want your lungs to be as diseased as a Faider fan on gameday...

There...that should do it...

I have one month to quit from today's date. The reason for my deadline is because on May 12, I will be getting braces put on, and I can just imagine that if I keep smoking and get the braces off next year, I will have white spots where the brackets were.

Give me some advice or helpful stuff that helped you quit.

(Pezedit) OH YEAH AND BY THE WAY... Mtbrncofn® JUST WENT OVER 4000 POSTS WOO! Giver some hell everyone!
The easiest way is to take the drug Zyban that can be prescribed by your doctor. I quit for a year and a half easyily like that. I was stupid and started again so now I am just using the gum and it works well. It just takes the edge off. I no longer need to smoke.

When I say I have quit for so and so days, I mean that I have no cigarettes. Like I'd ever be able to have them around and not smoke them.

Tomorrow night will be my biggest test to date. I will be going to town by myself for about 3 hours. If I can do that without stopping and somehow talking myself into buying cigarettes, I know I am doing good.

Thanks for the kind words.
