Probably near the edge of the wave or just a fake. For one thing, the tsunami sucks a lot of water out to sea before it reaches shore and this beach did not look like that. Secondly, if the cameraman really was in the path of the tsunami, a short jog to higher ground would not have been enough to survive. Think about it. If over 100,000 people drowned from the waves, it would be about 10-20 times as bad as depicted here.

I suspect this is either a spoof or someone caught a weak edge of the wave in some area a long way from the epicenter.

That video could have been from some where further.

When that wave reaches land. It's double over head. If not more.

Not every wave in that Tsunami was 30 feet-looked similar to most of the other footage-I thought it looked a little intimidating.

This is very sad.

The 9/11 can't compare to this. (i know its not the same, people vs natural disaster, but the death toll is going to be well into half a million)

At what point do you decide to run when you see a 30 foot wave coming for you at like 40-45 mph. My arse is gone after I see the first sail boat get pushed back. Carl Lewis couldn't catch me.

I'm in northern Cali I moved here from Colorado right before the big quake of the late 80's, that's what you call baptism by fire-my dad had taken me to the world series and we were in the parking lot picking up a program. Thank god we have a Tsunami warning system in place, unfortunately if it ever did happend I'd be more concerned about the earthquake.

Do you see how far out the tide is in these pictures? Look how far out to sea some of these people are standing. That's what I'm talking about. I only saw the linked video once but that wasn't what I saw in the video.

The wave in the video wasn't that big... one can only see the water going in about 20-30 meters in land.... that's not much of a wave... the video no doubt was taken from a point not too close to the big tsunamis.

I downloaded a few vids from the internet and there are other vids that show more of the fury.

Not too many of the vids are very good because the camerman had to make a run for it in most of them.

The waver in the video looks more of a storm surge than a tsunami, like in a Hurricane.

Obivously, it being only one wave and a sunny day would discredit it being a Hurricane, but just the bigger wave that rode up a good 30 feet on shore than the norm depicts a surge rather than tsunami.

What a horrible tragedy! Doesn't make one feel real good about celebrating New Years this year.

3,000 Americans missing.

A question now about the Thai governmnet not warning people.

-----------------------------------------------
Tsunami warning halted ‘for tourist industry’

12/28/04 -- This from the Swedish paper Expressen.

Just minutes after the earthquake in the Indian Ocean on Sunday morning,
Thailand’s foremost meteorological experts were sitting together in a
crisis meeting. But they decided not to warn about the tsunami “out of
courtesy to the tourist industry,” writes the Thailand daily newspaper
The Nation.

The experts got the news around 8:00 am on Sunday morning local time. An
hour later, the first massive wave struck. But the experts started to
discuss the economic impacts when they discussed if a tsunami warning
should be issued.

The primary argument against such a warning was that there had not been
any floods in 300 years. Also, the experts believed the Indonesian
island Sumatra would be a “cushion” for the southern coast of Thailand.
The experts also had bad information; they thought the tremor was 8.1. A
similar earthquake occurred in the same area in 2002 with no flooding at
all.

One expert The Nation spoke with also noted that the department had only
four earthquake experts among their
900-strong meteorological department. A second told The Nation that a
tsunami warning was discussed but that because of the risk, they opted
not to issue a warning.

“We finally decided not to do anything because the tourist season was in
full swing,” the source said. “The hotels were 100 percent booked. What
if we issued a warning, which would have led to an evacuation, and
nothing had happened. What would be the outcome? The tourist industry
would be immediately hurt. Our department would not be able to endure a
lawsuit.”

Poor tourist industry, ever hear of better safe than sorry? 150,000 lives are not worth the risk of losing tourism?

"Our department would not be able to endure a lawsuit.”

This is what decisions are based on now.

Ironic that they think like that because of the tourists.
