My family and I (my bro and sister and thier families from Den) went to Gulf Shores about 9 years ago after Little Girl Dog was christened down in Jackson Miss. A hurricane had come through about 2-3 weeks before, and it was ok, so I'm hopeful that gulf shores will weather ok, given that they basically rebuilt the entire beach system after Camille, which was before my time down here. They may have to haul in enough sand to cover Haiti, but moving Haiti here might be a gift to all concerned (-:
However, if there's a stormsurge of 15-16 feet like they're saying, Mobile Bay is gonna be "interesting." Thanksgiving at the Grand is not gonna happen, but old Ben's got kidney failure, and while I think he'll make it through to get stabilized to have a realitively healthy year or two, I think I'll be hanging close to home with him for awhile. My Kid's teacher has 20 people in her house. The vet's place is full of pets being farmed out. My kid's godparents have 10-20 extra folks, and we may be housing some of their kids. freaking mess. No hotel rooms between the coast and Memphis. I'd suspect Birmingham is full and people are either going to shelters or moving on to Atl and Nashville. |

The City is under sea level!! Actually, from what I understanc, it is the Corp of Engineers that has diked and leveed the Mississippi way up to Minny that has essentially created a giant firehose, that no longer floods up river, and now no longer deposits the silt at the mouth of the River and that once created the pennisula/isthumus? that would create a natural protection. So, protecting against flood in one place has added to a danger in NOLA. So, the City has put millions into levees and pumps. the Corps has been pumping silt or dirt to try and "naturalize' the situation.

You know, I was really thinking about how Hurricanes need to hit California.
Random thought that I figured I'd share. |

Sounds pretty horrific in the aftermath of Ivan... they are estimating $4 Billion in damages and I'm sure the death toll will be huge. There are 1.1 million people without power in the area too... Man, if that thing had not turned away from Louisiana at the last hour, we'd be talking about another Galveston type of tragedy here... And with Tropical Storm Jeanne nipping on the heels of this one... its gonna be a long worrisome weekend for the entire coast again...
