Default Rare NFL Rules

The first one everyone knows but the one I found interesting was fair catch //kicking a field goal and the D must line up 10 yards off the ball.

Could not find an embed on this so here is the link.

I can't stand answers.com ever since they went to their "Always a slideshow" format. It's incredibly tedious.

Doesn't help that he linked to the final slide in the slideshow.

For those who don't want to have to rewind through the slides:

It ends up not being worth the time to go through all of the slides.

I've seen the fair catch field goal attempt once. Back in the 80s. The kick was missed.

I would like to know more about the fair catch rule.

So if we decide before hand that we want a fair catch then we get to kick the ball from where we catch it and the D has to line up 10 yards back.

So if I read that right then if you are down by 3 and your kicker can put it threw the uprights on kickoffs and there is 5 seconds left in the game why haven't more teams tried this ? It has to be better odds then the Hail Mary.

Didn't San Fran do that fair catch then FG attempt thing at the end of the 1st half this year? Think it was a Thursday game.

Missed the free kick.

The Broncos tried the fair catch/free kick once. I remember it semi-well. Red Miller's last year (I think). At home, end of 1st half, Fred Steinfort from 73 yards, which they said he had done a few times in practice. I got excited since that distance would be the NFL record by ten yards. He tried to give it an extra hard kick and ended up shanking it badly, maybe went 40 yards.

I would love to see the Broncos just once hand the ball back next season when they get scored on

Yeah, I think they did try it, or it was discussed during the game.

The only time this us remotely useful is in the final seconds before halftime or the end of the game, and the kickoff team kicks the ball short. So it's extremely rare.

Ha, wellllllll no **** considering the only time it can be done is at the end of half.

The "ten yard rule" I've never heard. I always thougt it was simply a free kick.

Should have gone with the background image of Belichick for the "palpably unfair act" slides.
