Commitment to Mediocrity!

As long as Alex Smith is your QB, Chiefs will continue to be just good enough to make the playoffs every once in a while. Until they decide to draft QBOTF in the first round, the 20-year playoff losing streak will continue.
Sign him to a long-term!

Some big time player salaries will be gone after next year. Flowers is the most likely, along with possibly Tamba. Smaller salaries like Fasano and Avery will probably be gone too.

Pioli was stupid with these contracts. Dorsey signed Bowe to a big contract, but we can cut him after next year and save a lot of money if we want to. We can't do that with Flowers this year.

I think it is unlikely Bowe is cut until after the 3rd year of the contract. KC will have some money to work with for sure, but will need to pay Houston more money as well.

Bowe cant be cut until 2016 or 2017.

Yep, 2015 has a 10 mil dead money cap hit, 2 mil savings. 2016 has a 6 mil dead money cap hit, 7 mil in savings, 2017 2-3 mil dead money cap hit, 10 mil in savings.

Probably not.

Houston, Berry and Poe will need to be paid soon.

Berry's already getting paid. He might get $2-3 million more on average than his first contract, but it's not going to be a substantial increase.

Chiefs just lost their Oline in free agency they're gonna be the worst team in the West this year. Just because there schedule is brutal I see them going 5-11

Smith should be top 5 to 10 paid QB? That would be as stupid as Chicago or Dallas.

It's the going rate. Once Cutler got overpaid every other QB has their benchmark for what they want. Also doesn't help that QB's are now getting enormous contracts like Rodgers, Romo and Flacco.
It raises the price for any decent QB.

Well that is the price of mediocrity and Smith is perfect for the bar of mediocre that KC loves. Reid also loves mediocrity and is a match made in heaven.

I really hope that KC locks up Alex Smith now. Because if they wait until the end of the year, Chiefs will be 8-8 or below, and they wont give Smith the big money like they did Cassell. They will give him a smaller QB contract and will be getting him cheap, we need them to give him a Matt Cassell Deal.

-27 TD's last year (top 10).
-Top 5 fewest INT's of starting QB's last year.
-9 TD's/0 INT's in his playoff history (last game was one of the best QB performances in NFL history and he lost his best player opening drive).
-Top 10 winning % the last 4 years and on 2 different teams.

That's mediocre? With Reid it sure looks like Alex an above average QB who can win in the playoffs.

Should be interesting to know why you think Alex is so mediocre.

I think Smith is better than what he gets in KC. He can only make them better. Not sure if it is the type of QB that gets you over the top (well, over the top in KC is winning a playoff game so he might be good enough for that) but unless KC gets that 2000 Ravens defense, it won't be a powerhouse.

Manning is a $20 million QB. Alex is probably around 14 or 15.

Hate to agree with you, but you're right. There is also a shortage of QB's. So teams without one are going to be willing to overpay to sign one as we saw what a difference KC's team was when they swapped out Cassel for Smith.

I don't think Smith's in the Top 10, but he's definitely in the Top 15, and that's going to lead to someone overpaying him. If you're a Chiefs fan, just have to hope it's not KC

Sounds like Jake Plummer in Denver under Shanny.

I wonder if the Chefs' D will be lucky enough to face 10 inept backup QBs in a row like they did last year.

I made that comparison last year when we traded for Alex, but I think he's better than Plummer because he's smarter, takes better care of the ball and he...ya know, cares about football
