Personally, whenever anyone wished me Happy Holidays, I always just assumed they meant "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year", considering most people do actually celebrate Christmas. In fact, isn't there a song about that?

More than once I've made someone feel like a complete ass when I've been "corrected" wishing them Happy Holidays. Usually goes a little something like this:

Me: Have a great night and Happy Holidays!

Woman (usually old and frigid): Ahem. Excuse me? Merry Christmas.

Me: Yes. I was wishing you a Merry Christmas, and I don't expect to see you before next week, so I was wishing you a Happy New Year at the same time. Two...holidays. Plural.

Woman: Humph.
