They don't necessarily have to bring in a DT, IMO.

For example, if thought there was a better player at DE that was better at DE than any DT available on the scrap heap, they may bring him in and just kick Wolfe or Malik inside to permanent DT duty for the rest of the year. And let the new guy back up the DE's.

Just a thought, but of course it would only make sense if there is a servicable DE out there. I wonder if Youboty has made strides? If so, he could get promoted.

Absolutely an option, but there isn't really a particularly effective DE out there who fits our current scheme. Another problem is moving Wolfe because of what he does to facilitate for Von, that's chemistry we would lose.

We would also no longer play read and react (A 2 gapping technique) from our DTs up front, since we would be losing size kicking Wolfe inside. The positive is the pass rush would improve, the downside is we would be exposed against the run.

As much as I think Malik needs to see the field more, I do like his role as a sub package pass rusher. Wolfe opens so much up for Von, it's hard to move him inside and lose that chemistry.

The way I see it there are three options.

1. Sign Bannan/or another DT to play base downs without changing the scheme, still playing read and react to the run and substituting to our packages and looks with Malik and Wolfe, which is our strength.

2. Change the scheme to more of a penetrating traditional 4-3 style scheme and not the hybrid we run. Move Wolfe to DT, and bring Ayers to LDE. Our LBs will be exposed as we will be MUCH smaller upfront, and this may not benefit Von to well, or it could have no affect on him.

3. Heavy rotation. Give Malik increased reps at DT. I'm not sure if he could handle the workload of a full time DT. Williams or Unrein could play base downs and Malik sub in as he does now just more frequently and increase his playing time. Maybe he could become an eventual starter.

Is this the DT that played so well in Carolina the panthers actually tried moving him over to the O-line?

A little of both. He is thier Ben Garland. They were very deep at DT, but not so much at OL, so they tried to move him. It didn't work out.

This is our first round pick, scouting reports had him as more of a NT but he showed a quick first step and ability to be disruptive at times on the tape.

Warren Sapp said that Sly reminded him of himself more than Floyd did.

Even since he went out, run defense has collapsed. Coincided with Wolfe going down too.

We mentioned Richard Seymore earlier in this thread. I don't know if its even practical to sign a guy off the street at this juncture, but a major problem this defense has is there is no nastiness in this unit and is severely lacking leadership. I know he would cure one of those issues. Mitch Unrein is not getting it done.

Guess I underestimated how big his loss would be. Really need Wolfe to come back, at least.

Yeah, knew he was a good player, just didn't think the run defense would go to absolute **** without him

Loss of Big Vick and Wolf has wrecked the preciously stout run D. At least we get Wolf back.

Vick has been great the past few years. I was surprised another team didn't try and swoop him up this past offseason. Denver needs to sign him this offseason.

Think about it though. It is not a coincidence Woodyard was suddenly deemed unacceptable at MLB when he went down. They didn't feel Wes could take on the barrage of guards and centers that would inevitably be in his face. They thought getting bigger by putting Paris in there would possibly neutralize things, but it didn't work.

The whole thing has snowballed to the point where they have two good weakside guys overstepping their capabilities, and possibly the players are questioning the coaches' decisions on playing time. And that dynamic could get worse, especially after tonight's suckfest.

slow down on wolf, i'm hearing even if he does come back he may never be the same player

lets just say his situation threatens his ability to maintain an NFL body

the organization is very pessimistic about his future in the nfl.

Malik Jackson got a lot of the run down PT in this game. Results were not good. SD doubled his ass 2-3 yds off the LOS most running plays and then sprung into the LB's laps. The run defense is in very real trouble unless Sly Williams explodes into the player the coaches thought we were drafting. I haven't seen it on run downs though.

Spot on post. I think the destruction of our little dynamics on D is adding up. Rahim is way better than Mike "Can't Tackle For Crap" Adams and the middle is suddenly leaky.

Very much like baseball, the middle in football. So important to control the point of attack.
