McCann is a colossal upgrade at catcher for them in every way. I'm less than thrilled with the Ellsbury signing but he and Gardner (who missed most of last year) give them good speed on the bases and good range in the outfield. I would have preferred they kept Granderson and passed on Ellsbury because Grandy gives you better power for considerably less money, but Ellsbury is a very good player (if he can stay healthy) and hits for higher average. Cano is a big loss but assuming they add a decent replacement at 2B, sign another bat (Beltran, Choo, etc.), and have healthier years from Teixeira and Jeter, the offense should be improved. Pitching is the key, though. They need to add 2 starters.

They still need more. Morales needs to step up where he was with the Angels before he broke his leg. Fischer would have been a complete stud if he ever (and all Mariners pitchers) got run support. Hernandez loves the signing but oh boy, huge contract.

Well, the criteria was lineup, not defense.

As for the rest.....

healthy Ellsbury
adding a decent replacement at 2b
sign Beltran or Choo or equivalent
healthy years from Teixeira and Jeter

Lot of "if"s there.

+ as you mention, 2 starters (and I would add a closer on par with Rivera just to break even there).

I'll give you Cano, but Granderson?

Except for the half season when he could actually hit lefties, he was lost.

They paid Ellsbury too much, but he's a good player.

It's not like the Yankees could ever get him out.

40+ homers and 100+ RBIs each of his last two full seasons? Which of Ellsbury or McCann did that?

I never said they did, but they've never played a season with the short porch in right at the Stadium either.

Somewhat inflated numbers by where he played his home games and swinging from his heels all the time.

I sure as hell won't miss Grandy's strikeouts and odd paths to the ball.

McCann's swing in particular is built for Yankee stadium. His power numbers will go up.

Free-agent outfielder Carlos Beltran has agreed to a three-year, $45 million deal with the New York Yankees, sources confirmed to ESPN.com on Friday night.

With Beltran with the Yankees now, just what the heck are they going to do with that OF?
They have 6 outfielders on the roster making a combined $90 million next year, which is crazy.
Wells, Ellsbury, Soriano, Beltran, Ichiro and Gardner.

I think the Mariners will end up regretting the Cano deal, but I suppose they had to do something. What are they doing with Ackley? Still holding on to him being an everyday player somewhere?

Soriano will probably be the primary DH, and Beltran will DH some as well. They probably try to somehow move (trade? release?) one of Wells/Ichiro/Gardner.

If they somehow get someone dumb enough to take Wells, that will just be the greatest trade ever.
I imagine they hope Ichiro retires? Wells is owed $24 million this year I believe.
I could see Beltran in RF, Ellsbury in CF and Gardner in LF? Lots of speed.

Hoping.

Ackley, Smoak, Montero, Franklin, Seager and Miller are probably all trade bait for SEA since Cano is in the fold (with Bloomquist) so much is variable. Ackley can play OF, but his bat doesn't justify it.

My guess is one of those guys or more gets traded with a pitcher (outside Walker) to get a bat.

Seager and Miller? Eesh. Seager to third, Miller to short, Ackley 4th OF/IF...

It's true though that they can't stop with Cano, because last year's team with Cano still blows...

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Colorado Rockies have acquired Brett Anderson from the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday in exchange for pitchers Drew Pomeranz and Chris Jensen.

The Rockies also will receive $2 million cash from the A's to help offset Anderson's salary, a source told ESPN's Buster Olney.

Worried about SS unless Miller can step up. Franklin tanked last year after showing signs of life. Hopefully this new manager and guys can help people hit. We have a lot of talent, especially if Zunino and DJ Peterson pan out.

Pomeranz ended up being horrible for the Rockies. If the Rockies can get the healthy Anderson, might be a good addition. Big if though.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Los Angeles Angels, Chicago White Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a three-team trade that would send Mark Trumbo to Arizona, Adam Eaton to Chicago and pitchers Hector Santiago and Tyler Skaggs to Los Angeles.

The Diamondbacks, Angels and White Sox believe they pulled off the perfect swap: a win-win-win.

Arizona also will receive a player to be named later -- likely withheld because at least one will be exposed in Thursday's Rule 5 draft -- or cash from each of the other clubs.

In addition, the Diamondbacks have offered a one-year deal to right-hander Joba Chamberlain for close to $3 million, a source told ESPN's Buster Olney. Chamberlain was 2-1 with a 4.93 ERA for the New York Yankees last season.

Trumbo has hit more than 30 home runs in each of his past two seasons. He batted .234 with 34 home runs and 100 RBIs this past season while hitting in one of the more pitcher-friendly parks in baseball. He will play left field for the Diamondbacks and along with Paul Goldschmidt will give the team considerable right-handed power.

The Tigers are telling teams they're not optimistic about completing a contract extension with Max Scherzer, according to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark (Twitter link). However, despite the fact that Scherzer is a year away from free agency, Detroit has no plans to deal him, Stark adds.
Quote:
Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports offers a different take (on Twitter), as sources have indicated to him that Scherzer is "definitely in play." While nothing is imminent, says Passan, teams are aware that Scherzer can be had.

I think it's pretty obvious that they are slashing payroll....even though they say differently.

Scott Boras would obviously like to get Max Scherzer to free agency and hit the open market after next season and the Tigers probably know another team would make him an offer that they wouldn't match.

The Tigers added some speed by signing OF Rajai Davis to a 2 year deal.

It also looks like they are going to sign Joba Chamberlain to a 1 year deal for 2.5 million.

I'd have rather kept Joaquin Benoit around as the setup man, but I guess Joba Chamberlain is a low risk signing.

I'm ok with the Tigers not overpaying for Shin-Soo Choo, as it looks like Scott Boras has jacked up the price way too high for a 31 year old player of his caliber.

Congrats to all. After the announcement of the HOF, I called my father in law to give him his good news Frank Thomas made it. Perfect that he bought a framed signed photo with 3 nice cards of Frank jyst 4 months ago. Well timed.
