He sucks, but we need depth. Time for Sylvester to step up. He got a pressure on Brady last game, but couldn't bring him down. Hopefully this expedites his development.

The opposing QB's thoughts of having Fua and Unrein lined up opposite of them is going to make them wet themselves.

FINALLY!!

A football team is so much better if you have a Tongan playing D-line.

Bannan did nothing in either of his 2 stops with us. Why not see what a young guy who has some potential in for a look.

It is the same type of pickup as the Huff pickup. A guy who is close to busting out the league that our staff think they can turn around for the better.

Look at it this way, they went after DRC when everyone else (including kFc) thought he was washed up and he has been our best CB this year.

Not expecting anything from this pickup this year but maybe down the road...who knows...

I agree. Bannan was average on his best day.

Now that's funny ... so funny I almost made an Amon Gordon joke. Almost.

There must be somebody better for a short 5-8 game run ...I was thinking maybe Fox drafted him in Carolina, but they missed each other by a year. Whatever you think of PFF's player rankings (I think fun to read but ultimately arbitrary), dead last is not good.

Justin Bannan would love to get the call ... but he's played tons of downs for 13 years. He must've looked his age early this season for the Lions, they let him go after three games.

You two know as well as anybody ... there's more to defense than sacking the quarterback.

Do I have to bring Barney Chavous in here again to explain that?

Shame we couldn't get Finch to play for us, provided he'd convert from OL.....he had a pretty good vertical leap, and scored a 39 on the Wonderlic

He wasn't good vs the run either and plus weren't they playing him more at DE in the type of role Wolfe is in now?

I hope Sly can be competent in the run game, Vick played the run hard and was a big wide body that ate a lot of space. If Sly can keep our LB's clean and make the couple of plays he missed Sunday night we will be OK and able to develop this dude we picked up off the street.

Fox and/or JDR seem to like the bigger thicker dudes at DT over the athletic smaller guys like Wolfe. Having a big guys like Knighton, Vick who can run and not get pushed around in the run game is nice to have. I hope they can keep Wolfe on the outside rather than have to move him around too much.

Honestly I can barely keep track of which position is which on the D-Line anymore. There were streetfights in here last summer over whether Von should be called a DE when he steps up and puts his hand on the ground, etc ....

Safe to say Bannan was never a penetrator, he was a gapper - he took up blockers. His best seasons were with the Ravens playing all 3 line spots in their 3-4. Converse to the Fau point I made about PFF ratings - you gotta believe that if Bannan was rated #19 against the run, that means something. After all, PFF rated WW best OLB against the pass last year, and Harris like the #9 cover CB I think? Sounds high, but it was a gaudy high rating.

Okay, I think I have to bring Barney in ... for the youngsters if nothing else......

. . . . . .

"Hello, my name is Barney Chavous. I started 13 straight years at LDE for
the Broncos, and my job was never in danger.

So it'll prolly surprise you I didn’t sack the QB, not a-one time until my 9th
year. That’s right, not a-one sack in eight seasons. That's when Coach Collier
changed the scheme some. After that I put up 23 sacks my last four years.
Wuddin’ nuttin’ I couldn’t a’done all along, just wasn’t my job until then.
So you see, there's more to defense than just sackin' the quarterback.

Glad I could help."

Terrance Knighton agrees with you:

Broncos Look to Rookie Williams
By ARNIE STAPLETON
AP Pro Football Writer

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) -- Defensive tackle Terrance Knighton took Sylvester Williams aside Wednesday in light of Kevin Vickerson's season-ending hip injury and told the Denver Broncos' first-round draft pick it's time for him to step up, speak up and grow up.

''Sly has the ability to be a game-wrecker,'' Knighton said in the locker room later. ''He just has to get the game down mentally ... He needs to be a little bit more vocal. Our goal is to win a Super Bowl, so he's going to have to grow up quick.''

man, watching that video and he sucks. Fires off the ball well, but has awful hand technique and lacks any ability to anchor down. Due to his awful hand technique he can't get any separation to make a play and has to rely on just dumb luck (i.e. running back running into him) to make a tackle.

I'll see DT Brian Price at Crenshaw High School's football game tomorrow night. I'll ask him if he wants to play.

They should just do what I did in my madden franchise. Go get BJ Raji and Ndamukong Suh. So easy.

While I agree that the defensive scheme ran by a team determines the player's role and job description, but there seems to be a discrepancy in how many sacks Chavous actually had probably because the NFL did not officially keep track of sacks as a statistic until 1982

Pro Football Reference shows he only had 23 sacks....however his wikipedia page claims this-

"He played his entire NFL career with the Broncos from 1973-1985. He ranks third on the Broncos' all-time sacks list with 75 and is tied with Tom Jackson for third in Broncos' career starts with 177."

OH GEEZ! That's right ... I'm so embarrassed, that is sad. Somebody just erase the thread please. errand you sacked me ... (are we keeping track?)

Always thought this looked funny

I should point this out: Those were NOT Barney Chavous's words, not at all. That was me writing AS Barney Chavous, trying to make the point more interesting, and ... err... you know, clear.
