I met Mike Hargrove and Charlie Manuel in the early to mid 1990s. Hargrove was the Indians manager at the time and Manuel was the hitting coach.

One of my buddies is a big Indians fan and got free tickets for the team caravan/dinner that stops into Toledo every winter. There are usually a few players and managers that travel around to some of the local cities to promote the team. Detroit does the same thing in Toledo every winter as well. Anyway, after dinner we left a little early and saw the team bus parked outside and we poked our head in there and Hargrove and Manuel were sitting in there, smoking cigars, if I recall right. Hargrove looked a little peeved that we just walked onto the bus, but after a minute he warmed up and was friendly enough....but Charlie Manuel couldn't have been nicer. He talked to us like we were long lost friends and had that West Virginia drawl.

I bet we talked baseball with him for 10 or 15 minutes and he seemed like he would have talked as long as we wanted to talk. He's got the kind of personality that makes you feel at ease and comfortable....a really nice man and a class act.

Charlie Manuel asked if we were staying for the autograph session back in the building after everything else wrapped up, but we told him we had to take off a little early and wouldn't be staying for that. He found a couple of new baseballs still in the box that they must use for the autograph sessions and he signed them and had Mike Hargrove sign them.

Lets compare two stiffs who never made Baseball America's top 100 prospect list to a five-tool player that got $41 million based on one workout.

Ichiro Suzuki got his 4,000th hit between the major leagues and Japan.

The 39-year-old Suzuki hit a liner off Dickey (9-12) that bounced just beyond diving third baseman Brett Lawrie for the milestone hit in the first inning. Suzuki broke a tie with Lou Gehrig when he got his 2,722nd major league hit in his 13th season. The speedy outfielder amassed 1,278 hits in nine seasons with Orix of Japan's Pacific League.

Back when he got resigned I commented how Anibal Sanchez would be a huge signing for the Tigers, and an underrated signing.
He's pitched extremely well on the year and being a phenomenal middle of the rotation guy.

Side note, whats up with Verlander? he can be one of the most inconsistent aces in the league. Pitched a brilliant outing, follows that up with giving up 6 runs.

I remember when you mentioned that.

Anibal Sanchez has pitched outstanding for the Tigers this season.

11-7 with a 2.45 ERA (1st in AL) and a 41 BB to 152 K ratio. His 1.13 WHIP is 8th in the American League.

As for Justin Verlander, he's been very inconsistent this season. I think he's having issues with his mechanics, specifically his shoulder angle. It would be one thing if he were getting crushed all season, but he'll pitch outstanding in one start and then look average/below average in his next start. It's either concentration/focus or mechanics and I tend to think it's a mix of both, but he mentioned fixing a hitch in his shoulder angle, pitched well for a few starts and then went right back to his erratic up and down performances.

Oakland has pimp smacked the Tigers in the first 3 games of their 4 game series.

They brought their bats with them to Detroit.

They scored 8 runs in the 1st game, 6 runs in a 6 inning rain shortened 2nd game, and are up 14-1 in the 8th inning tonight.

Max Scherzer takes the mound in the final game of the series for the Tigers tomorrow and will be going for his 20th win of the season. He's the ace of the staff this season and the ace is supposed to be the stopper.
