Like misturanderson, I'm not seeing, from that article, where they're considering a name change. The only thing that is mentioned is changing mascots.

How far were you from the student section?

They got rid of Boone in like 1997. Around 2008, the alumni association bucked the new administration by pooling money to get an unofficial Boone mascot. Just recently, the school decided not to let the mascot come to games.

From 1997 until today there were always "bring back Boone" chants. Around 2010 is when it became a preeminent at games.

I had student-section season tickets (almost exactly behind the south goal - Pios shoot twice) in 2009 and 2011... and attended about a third the games in 2010 (Spent a good chunk of that year in the Netherlands).

I don't recall ever not hearing it.

pi·o·neer

/ˌpīəˈni(ə)r/

Noun

A person who is among the first to explore or settle a new country or area.

Verb

Develop or be the first to use or apply (a new method, area of knowledge, or activity).

Synonyms

pathfinder - initiator - trailblazer
I don't know if they will change the name... just switching the mascot from Denver Boone to Elk, Jackelope or Mountain Climber. If their name is Pioneer, they should have a Pioneer mascot.

I would not be opposed to a compromise... change the name from "Denver Boone" to "Denver Pioneer" and get rid of the racoon hat... everything else the same.

You may be right, I'm not sure. I re-read the article and saw this line:

Quote:
Chancellor Robert Coombe in March announced that Boone will not be considered by a steering committee that has identified an elk, a jackalope and a mountaineer as finalists for a new mascot.
So now I'm confused. As long we're still called the DU Pioneers, I'm fine. If we become the DU Elk, etc, I will be pretty upset. If it's purely a mascot thing, they can trot Dinger out there for all I care. But the name is pretty important to me.

It seems like the name is safe...at least according to that article.

Native American Genocide.

Well, at least Daniel Boone killed the Indians.

Last time I checked there weren't any Native American pro or college teams naming themselves after each other.

I'm currently watching K-State vs. Oregon St. baseball. I had a thought. Could there be some women, out there, offended by "Beavers"?

The pioneers didn't commit genocide against the indians. They came into conflict with them, killed and were killed by them, but the genocide you are speaking of was the result of disease and military action by the U.S. Government. Only the most mush-brained fools would see "Pioneers" as an offensive team name.

Again, this isn't about the name Pioneers, it's about using Daniel Boone as the mascot.

All of what I said about pioneers applies to Daniel Boone. The only people who would take offense to him being used as a mascot are addled in the head. The dude killed no more Indians than he had to due to war, and the Indian peoples were not innocent in those wars as much as the PC crowd tries to pretend otherwise.

Well, there's the North Dakota Fighting Sioux.

Wonder when they'll get under fire.

From wikipedia... colleges with controversial mascots:

Alcorn State Braves
Bradley Braves
Central Michigan Chippewas
Chowan Braves
Florida Southern Moccasins
Florida State University Seminoles
Hawaiʻi Rainbow Warriors (men) and Rainbow Wahine (women) – "Wahine" is the Hawaiian word for "woman"
Since 2000, each team has been allowed to select its own mascot name; most notably, the football team has been simply known as "The Warriors". See University of Hawaii Athletics for details.
Memorial University of Newfoundland Beothuk - The Beothuk aboriginal peoples went extinct in 1829 and the university named was changed to Sea-Hawks in 1987 as the use of the Beothuk name was deemed offensive.
Mississippi College Choctaws
Ottawa University (KS) Braves
San Diego State Aztecs
UNC Pembroke Braves – representing a college originally created to educate American Indians
University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux
Utah Utes
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign - have removed all official university sanction of Native American imagery, but unofficially, still widely used by students and fans - there is considerable controversy over whether the term "Illini" as originally used at the university was directly related to Native American culture at all, or whether the imagery was added after the fact; documentation tends to indicate that "Illini" refers to the state of Illinois itself and not its indigenous peoples.[9]
William & Mary Tribe – no longer uses any imagery related to indigenous peoples

Interesting. I googled "Racist sports team names" and the first result led me to the Nation of Islam page founded by Louis Farrakhan.
