NEW YORK -- Michigan has picked up its highest-rated commitment in at least a decade.

Cornerback Jabrill Peppers (Paramus, N.J./Paramus Catholic), the No. 2 player in the Class of 2014, announced Sunday he would attend Michigan, selecting the Wolverines over LSU, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State University president Gordon Gee announced his retirement Tuesday after he came under fire for jokingly referring to "those damn Catholics" at Notre Dame and poking fun at the academic quality of other schools.

The remarks were first reported last week by The Associated Press, and Ohio State at the time called them unacceptable and said it had placed Gee on a "remediation plan" to change his behavior.

Gee, 69, said in a teleconference Tuesday that the furor was only part of his decision to retire, which he said he had been considering for a while. He said his age and the start of a long-term planning debate at the university were also factors.

"I live in turbulent times and I've had a lot of headwinds, and so almost every occasion, I have just moved on," he said.

Gee explained away the abrupt timing of his announcement by saying he was "quirky as hell" and hated long transitions,

Don't they have to agree to release him? I wonder why ND doesn't play hardball with him like FSU is doing with Matthew Thomas. If they don't agree he would have to wait till next Feb and would prolly just give in before that. That is what FSU is banking on.

They have released him to enroll at UCLA. But he can't play football until he is totally released OR his appeal goes through.

More than likely they will release him since he didn't go to U$C and it is bad PR for them if they don't.

I just don't understand the media. The president of Alabama endorses segregation for their fraternities and there is no outrage from the National media. He eventually becomes the Chancellor. This boob calls TCU "The little sisters of the poor" and makes a poor joke about Catholics and the **** hits the fan.

Day 1 of our long awaited hearing before the NCAA COI is over. It appears former basket ball coach Frank Hath may have had the case against him dismissed altho its not entirely clear. There are 2 more days left and he has left.

The hearings before the COI is now over after a day and a half. It was scheduled for 3 days. Not sure what happened.

Nebraska to study concussions

LINCOLN, Neb. -- If all goes according to Dennis Molfese's plan, the day is coming when a football player who takes a hit to the head will come to the sideline, take off his helmet and slip on an electrode-covered mesh cap.

The team's medical staff will analyze the player's brain waves on the spot and determine within minutes whether he can safely return to the game or whether he has sustained a concussion and, if so, how severe.

Big Ten Blog

Big Ten ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg and Brian Bennett write about all things Big Ten in the conference blog.

Blog network: College Football Nation

Putting the finishing touches on that device is among the projects planned in the University of Nebraska's Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior, which opens this month in Memorial Stadium's newly expanded east side.

CB3, as it's called, is housed in the same $55 million structure that holds 38 luxury suites and an additional 6,000 seats for the football stadium. The center is one of a number of university-affiliated research centers across the nation looking for better ways to diagnose and treat traumatic head injuries and make football and other sports safer.

"There has been great concussion research that's been going on for decades," said Molfese, the CB3 director. "It's disconcerting to realize just how little we really know."

CB3's main attraction is a type of magnetic resonance imaging machine -- known as a functional MRI -- that tracks the brain's blood flow. It's hoped the $3 million scanner helps in the effort to better define what is and is not a concussion.

"There's no question it's going to move the dial forward," NCAA chief medical officer Brian Hainline said. "The big, hoped-for dream would be, let's have a biomarker in brain imaging. If you're to the left of that, you're safe; if you're to the right of it, you're not. That's probably a few years out. But functional brain imaging and blood flow are going to be a very important part of that."

The MRI machine also can be used on game days to assess injuries of all kinds.

Molfese said the sideline concussion assessment tool would be the first of what he hopes are many groundbreaking developments to come out of CB3. The device would allow medical personnel to go beyond the standard practice of asking the injured athlete questions and judge, based on his or her answers, whether it's safe for him or her to return to a game.

If a linebacker took a hit to the head, he would come to the sideline and have an electrode net placed over his head. Battery-powered brain-recording equipment would measure the player's responses to stimuli.

"We can get an idea of what area of the brain is being involved in the process, whether the speed of processing is at the rate it should be," Molfese said. "The different areas of the brain that normally integrate information quickly stop doing that, so that's another way we should be able to pick up whether there is an injury or not."

Molfese said the device, which should be ready for use within one to two years, eventually could be used in hospitals to screen patients for head injuries.

"It would be routine," he said, "and they'd know within 10 minutes."

Tom Osborne, Nebraska's retired football coach and athletic director, said he's fascinated by the possibilities. He said suspected concussions were dealt with the same way throughout his football coaching career. The athletic trainer would hold up two or three fingers in front of the woozy player's face as he came off the field and ask him how many.

"If you could come close," Osborne said, "they'd put you back in. That wasn't very effective."

Former Wisconsin DE David Gilbert has transferred to Miami and will play this season without having to sit out a year. If he is over his foot issues, he will be a big time contributor to our defense.

DE-Gilbert
DT-Porter
DT-Pierre
DE-Chickillo
WLB-Perryman
MLB-Kirby
SLB-Figueroa
CB-Gunter
CB-Howard
S-Jenkins
S- Bush

I'm expecting significant improvement from this unit...which won't be hard because we had the worst defense in 30 years last year. The offense should be one of the 4 or 5 the best in the entire country but the D will be the key.

While Johnny Football was busy getting kicked out of the Manning Passing Academy...Miami's Stephen Morris won the Skills Competition and got rave reviews.

Morris finished last year on a roll with 11 TD and 0 INT in his last 4 games. He has a live arm and great mobility.

problem is... Morris never does it in a game on a consistent basis. he looks wonderful for 3 quarters and then ****s the bed.

I think he turned a corner the last quarter of the seasin. Outside of maybe Oregon there isn't a more stacked offense in the country this year. 5 starter quality WRs....a veteran stud OL....the best JUCO TE in the country and the Duke in the backfield behind him.....Stephen will have a great year.

Defense is another story....
