Default Why Rational People Buy Into Conspiracy Theories

Why Rational People Buy Into Conspiracy Theories

Quote:
ďThe best predictor of belief in a conspiracy theory is belief in other conspiracy theories,Ē says Viren Swami, a psychology professor who studies conspiracy belief at the University of Westminster in England. Psychologists say thatís because a conspiracy theory isnít so much a response to a single event as it is an expression of an overarching worldview.

With a last name like "Swami" I'm betting he's involved in some kind of mind-eraser cult.

Very interesting:

Instead, the amygdala jump-starts the rest of the brain into analytical overdrive ó prompting repeated reassessments of information in an attempt to create a coherent and understandable narrative, to understand what just happened, what threats still exist and what should be done now. This may be a useful way to understand how, writ large, the brainís capacity for generating new narratives after shocking events can contribute to so much paranoia in this country.

ďIf you know the truth and others donít, thatís one way you can reassert feelings of having agency,Ē Swami says. It can be comforting to do your own research even if that research is flawed. It feels good to be the wise old goat in a flock of sheep.

Sounds like somebody I know.

I'm sure some will be curious to know who is actually behind this study!

Um..................no. Wrong. Clearly you don't understand what a conspiracy theory is.

Regarding climate change...

Quote:
An international team of scientists analyzed the abstracts of 11,944 peer-reviewed papers published between 1991 and 2011 dealing with climate change and global warming. Thatís right ó weíre talking about 20 years of papers, many published long before Superstorm Sandy, last yearís epic Greenland melt, or Australiaís ďangry summer.Ē

About two-thirds of the authors of those studies refrained from stating in their abstracts whether human activity was responsible for climate change. But in those papers where a position on the claim was staked out, 97.1 percent endorsed the consensus position that humans are, indeed, cooking the planet.

The scientists involved with the new study also asked the authors of the peer-reviewed papers for their personal reflections on the causes of global warming. A little more than one-third expressed no opinion. Of those who did share a view, 97.2 percent endorsed the consensus that humans are to blame. Out of the 1,189 authors who responded to the survey, just 39 rejected the idea that humans are causing global warming.

Personally I don't think it's conspiracy theorizing as much as it is a general lack of faith and trust in the "powers that be".

Considering your lack of knowledge on climate change, it would probably be in your best interest to sit this one out. Take a lap.

Conspiracies do exist. Collusion is another word for conspiracy.

Climate Change Deniers in Oklahoma ask for billions of dollars to recover

Rhode Island Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse took to the Senate floor to rail against his Republican colleagues for denying the theory of anthropogenic global warming.

Whitehouse spent 15 minutes chastising GOP senators and justified his remarks by alluding to states that seek federal assistance in the wake of natural disasters.

When cyclones tear up Oklahoma and hurricanes swamp Alabama and wildfires scorch Texas, you come to us, the rest of the country, for billions of dollars to recover.

Conspiracies exist. Not all that exists is a conspiracy.

Exactly!

How does the IRS scandal reinforce/validate "conspiracies"?

The last Congressional investigation into the murder of JFK concluded that more than one shooter was probably involved -- and that the assassination of JFK was therefor a conspiracy.

Given this fact -- the next question is: Why has the US Justice Department not reopened the case? There is no statute of limitation for murder.

Of course, the answer is that idiots like W*gs exist at every level of the media, and in gov't and do their best to derail every honest attempt to expose the truth, unpleasant though it be.

Technically true, but generally the term refers to the type of stuff that only retards or the unmedicated mentally ill get involved in.

In my experience, people with no social life read that much.

Just an observation.

The comparison of our social lives would be just too fun. It would also be devastating for you to have to endure. I will spare you the embarrassment. I am sure looking in the mirror every day is reminder enough of a life not fully lived.

They have a good saying for that in Germany: Niemand wird die Ware verbessern, wenn Sie nicht selbst zu tun.
