Blu ray on Xbox as well now.

For the most part I'm really disappointed in the Xbox one announcement. So I can watch TV and movies and use Skype? Access the internet? meh. Sounds like they're trying to compete with the iPad rather than the ps4!

I really just care about the games and the hardware in a new system. Both of which we heard almost nothing about.

Oh also, another axe I have to grind, if you're going to show a new game enough with the cinematics! Show us the gameplay on the fancy new hardware!

I can't believe they announced a video game system with pretty much zero gameplay footage of new games. Whoever made that decision should be fired.

What is the first whole number degree after 360 on a circle?

Survey says, 1, or 361 if its continuous, but really just 1!

Funny how when Sony announced the PS4, they did not show a system. Talked about it, showed off the controller. But they basically showed off games.

People still complained. E3 is going to be fairly awesome this year.

Never did much care for consoles (games I like don't translate, at all, to consoles) but wow looks like MS is going off the deep end trying to come full circle making this new XBox.. a full blown computer.

Also, **** voice interaction. Never has worked, and even if it would actually be able to understand my oh so exotic standard midwestern accent, it's always slow and tedious compared to pretty much any other input method.

Aside from the playstation fanboys who have brought literally nothing to this conversation, I can understand some of the concerns. For me, the used game market and how these consoles deal with that will be the deal breaker for me. I'm not married to any franchise on any of the three systems. I probably like the Nintendo franchises in Zelda and Metroid the most, and I have no intention of getting the new Nintendo system. Final Fantasy stopped being cool sometime after FFVIII for me when it became so J-Pop it was unplayable.

So there are two things I'll care about - my wallet and the used games since I rarely buy games new (which is directly related to my wallet). We'll see who steps up.

To hell with the internet required problem. What's with the "camera and microphone that is never turned off and is connected to the internet".

What could possibly go wrong!

It's a money dump, as Chris mentioned above. Waste of $. Waste of resources. Nothing spectacular about it.

Next system up: PS4.
PS is fine... if you have midget hands with tiny fingers.

I'll be getting XB1, but probably not immediately. Still very pleased with my 360.

my brief take (I didn't watch the conference and haven't time to do so today either)

on complaints about xbox one being too heavy on TV and other non-gaming media:

I think microsoft is right - statistically people spent a lot more time streaming media on 360 than they did playing games. The future of tv (on-demand and streamed) is a big business opportunity for them and was always the intention with xbox, one of their few clear success areas. I see the emphasis on all media as positive for game developers because if it's essentially the new cable box you've got gaming hardware built in. That's going to remove the hardware barrier and bring your game to a wider audience. I think things will get worse for AAA gaming generally (i.e. outside of the 5 or so big players) before AAA either shrinks for a bit or merges with social / indie to become something new that's more popular than ever... meaning i think there's a future for a healthy "mature gaming" ecosystem but not until there is a breakthrough in cost control or a significant expansion of the audience (a harder battle than it should be due to risk averse publishers).

I have a ps3 and its been a great multi-media device for us. We watch a lot of streaming tv and movies and play a few games now and then. I think all major "gaming" devices are going more and more this way. That looks like what the xbox is doing. Problem is that they need to have great game content as well or they'll struggle, like the PS3 did for awhile after its launch.

Truthfully, this used game issue is a concern. I think Sony and Microsoft will mirror each other on the used game issue. I also expect both companies to have a much larger focus on trying to sell all of their games over their internet library stores... cheaper production cost and distribution cost while clearly stopping people from being able to play the game on a system at a different location.

I personally just game on my desktop and use my laptop to for movie/tv streaming through my tv. I haven't had a cable or satellite service for years now and dont' miss it one bit.

The only reason I bought a PS3 was for the blu-ray player. My laptop can take care of being my multimedia device better than any console. And since I'm not into console gaming, I won't be getting any of the new gen consoles.

I'll second that. If I can use my Gamefly membership with the PS4 and not with the new Xbox the decision will be easy for me.

The PS controller is definitely the biggest reason I'm hesitant to switch. But always-on Kinect and the possibility of used game blocking trump that in the end. Maybe someone will make a third party PS4 controller that feels more like an Xbox controller...

Honestly, I felt that the compromise of activation codes was pretty fair. I.E. you can purchase a used game, but unless you get valid activation code for it, you don't get access to the online features, updates, content and support. You still get the core game, which you paid for, but the publishers don't have to spend their resources supporting a player who has removed them from the compensation process.

I don't have a problem with what I think Xbox one is doing, ie, to sell the game you have to uninstall it from your system. I do that anyway. I don't know if that's what they mean. Here's what we do know that they have come out and said very clearly.
  1. You will have install all games on the Xbox one.
  2. You don't have to wait for the install to finish while you play. It will install in the background while you start.
  3. The system itself doesn't require you to be online to play games (those that aren't online games, obviously) but if a game developer wants it always online, it will be.
  4. Once the game is installed, you don't have to keep the disc in your machine to play it.
  5. They are going to allow for the buying and selling of "retail used games" is the words they used.
  6. There will be no fees added on to installing a used game.
  7. Since save games are stored on the cloud, you can play your game at a friends house and it will keep the save when you come home.
  8. You will be able to share the game with friends in your network somehow (the details of this are forthcoming.)

So from that I gather it's going to be two things. It's probably something where you have to remove your install before you sell the disc. I suppose your gamestop guys would verify the license is removed before they accept it in trade. It would make it riskier if you're buying from someone else direct though.

The alternative is Microsoft creating their own internal marketplace where you can sell the digital copy online or even trade with others online. This would ensure the trade happens. Microsoft could even make all transactions be paid in Xbox points, or at least provide some sort of bonus for trading in that "currency" to keep the funds internal. I would actually like this in some measure because it would be easier to buy and sell your games, and it would drive the price down. The downside is gamestop would probably go out of business. I wouldn't be thrilled but I could live with that.

We'll see what they do.
