I don't like this at all. Elway hiring qualified people for jobs with the Broncos. Doesn't he have a brother or brother-in-law he could bring in to be the draft Guru?

Failing? Probably. I mean he was a leftover part of McDA's staff! Nuff said!

Heckert, who's heading into his 23rd season, was a fan favorite in Cleveland for stocking the team with quality starters such as Joe Haden, T.J. Ward, Phil Taylor, Jabaal Sheard, Jason Pinkston, Shawn Lauvao, Trent Richardson, Brandon Weeden, Mitchell Schwartz, Greg Little and Mitchell Schwartz.

Hired by former Browns President Mike Holmgren, Heckert joined the franchise in January 2010 and became popular among the majority of fans because of the three drafts he orchestrated during his tenure in Cleveland. Heckert, who has Youngstown roots, landed cornerback Joe Haden, defensive tackle Phil Taylor, running back Trent Richardson and quarterback Brandon Weeden in the first round and running back Montario Hardesty, defensive end/linebacker Jabaal Sheard, wide receivers Greg Little and Josh Gordon and offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz with second-round picks.

One of the comments from your link;

Congrats Tom , you get to go work for a classy organization and one that just might win a super bowl and Elway and Manning. My god you hit the jackpot and deserve it. Please try not to remember too many of the bad days here in Cleveland. You did a great job with the draft contrary to want a few might say. It's a shame you didn't get a chance to finish it. At least you're not a part of this now regretyfully.

Good Luck and may you be wearing a ring next year. Manning just doesn't have that many years left - with his neck - god bless him for having the courage to play. Guess you have to find his repacement sooner or later and that will be a task.

Lol at Mike Lombardi's draft. Hey, at least he didn't trade the farm for a 3rd round back-up QB...yet.

Heckert spent nine seasons (2001-09) in Philadelphia, working as director of player personnel for two years, another three as VP of player personnel, and then four years as GM. For three of those seasons (2006-08), current Broncos director of player personnel Matt Russell was a scout under Heckert's watch.

I've got a bud who is a die hard knowledgeable Browns fan and he wasn't happy that they let Tom Heckert go, as he was very happy with the drafts that he conducted for the team, outside of the Brandon Weeden selection.

I wonder how much influence Holmgren had on these drafts? Holmgren was the problem IMHO. He had GM/Coaching authority in Seattle and he sucked horribly at it so they revoked his GM capacity. So my question is, did Heckert have final say or did Holmgren in Cleveland?

wouldn't it be hilarious if Heckert helps us win a SB? that would be yet another moment of Elway torturing Cleveland.

Hopefully we don't need him to find a QB ever. Otherwise, awesome.

Wait for it! When Manning retires we will do an Osweiler for Weeden trade straight up. By the time that happens Weeden will already be as old as Peyton Manning is now. That is what I call a win-win situation.

Holmgren had final say. You can't really say those Browns drafts were Heckerts choices.

I'll bet that Matt Russell probably witnessed Heckert actually drafting good players but was over ruled on many of them by Holmgren. Elway found this guy through Russell. I mean, I'm sure Elway knew who he was but I'm sure the fact that Heckert worked previously with Heckert had something to do with the hire.

So to all those mangers out there, in some office, be good to the guys below you. You never know, someday they could be your boss.

That's kinda what I thought. Obviously it will be the same situation here as Elway will have final say on all draft picks. I did not agree with the move when Cleveland traded up to draft Trent Richardson, that was an unwise trade. Richardson is good, but he's not that good.

they only did that to calm the waters and appease the fans who were pissed off because they didn't get RGIII.
it was always RGIII or Richardson for them.
plus they didn't deal that much for him. a 1st,4th,5th and 7th.
they had a crap load of picks and needed to make sure they got who they wanted.

but good lord Holmgren sucks at drafting QB's lately. well he pretty much always sucked at drafting QB's. but Colt McCoy and Brandon Weeden are the best you can do for a franchise QB?

This is a great move by Elway.

Heckert played in the league for nearly 10 years in Miami, then become a scout, worked his way up to pro personnel and into Philly when they had their golden run of yearly playoff success short of the superbowl.

Based on the success there he was hired as the GM in Cleveland with final say over all roster moves.

The two years in Cleveland as GM weren't as successful in his career but he's NOT going to be the GM. He'll be replacing Kidd as director or pro player personnel - same position he excelled at with Philly when they sent a dozen or more pro bowlers in one year in 2009/10 I think.

Would be great to get another experienced mind in planning for games against the AFC.

Post at IAOFM today suggesting Russell's increased power and that the Broncos have hired John Spytek, formerly with the Browns under Heckert, as director of college scouting.

Spytek looks like a really nice pick-up as well -- Elway's really bolstering the scouting departments these days. Good for him.
