The free agents available right now are going to run out of options. They can basically hope a team that needs their services can't find it in the draft or there is a preseason injury. At the end of the day, though, once they are deep into their camps teams will be more likely to go to war with what they have rather than blow their load at a big signing.

Guarantee the Broncos won't draft a CB if they sign Winfield. Looks like they are trying to keep Tony Carter as far away from the field as possible...which is a plan I agree with.

Signing a CB would pretty much open up the Broncos to draft best DE and best LB available with their first two picks. I would choose Damontre Moore and Sio Moore. It would be a veritable draft bonanza.

At the risk of angering the bewildering anti-IAOFM crowd, here's a detailed look at the cap situation including the savings from potential cuts.

Spending the entire $14M rollover in one year would be the dumbest move ever for the Broncos long-term. Even after they cut Mays and Kuper, I can see them bringing in maybe Koppen and/or Brooking ONLY if Walton and Irving suck...but that's it.

Freeney is not coming to Denver people. He wants a multi year deal and I don't think Elway wants to go that route. We just picked up Phillips and got a nice DE project in the draft. With Jackson and Ayers and Beal, we've go depth and some talent. We'll get it done.

I've read the Jets now owe the team $1.5+ million now that Tebow has been cut. Evidently, JMcD payid him an advance on his salary and JE negoitiated repayment of that advance as part of the trade.

Wonder if that was factored in the cap situation?

Freeney screwed himself out of a job by asking too much, and he could have played for a real contender, maybe got another ring.. We got a better deal with Phillips. With the beef we added at DT I think our rush is not going to lose much if anything, and will probably be even more effective.

I am stoked that our D-line is going to be a nightmare for offenses with all the big bodies up front. We should be even better against the run, and if we get pressure up the middle with Knighton and Sly, Vickerson etc. the ends and are going to put a lot of pressure from the outside too. There is not going to be much time for anyone to go deep on us. We are going to see a lot of screens, bubbles and slants so our LBs are going to have to play big in the short zones.

I just hope that Champ hasn't lost another step this year and that CB and safety spots are solid.

No...its just cash owed to Denver. That cap space was spent when the trade happened and the bonus accelerated or in the previous two years.
It doesn't get added to our cap, just to Bowlens pocketbook.

don't you remember the trade getting held up with the Jets because we wouldn't deal him without the Jets agreeing to pay us that advance?
a lot of Denver fans were calling Elway all kinds of unholy due to him wanting to ship out Tebow and get the advance salary back.

What ever happened to Lonestar? I love looking at these Cap threads and wistfully remember him telling us how we have to trade Clady because we cannot afford to sign him. Then Elway goes on a huge FA spending binge and franchises Clady to boot!

Broncos have enough cap space to franchise Clady for the next two years ($9.83M in 2013 and $10.91M in 2014). He's worth it...best LT in the NFL. I don't care what phenom pass-rusher you put on the left side against Clady, if he's healthy, the DE is gonna get stoned.

Doesn't the franchise amount guarantee at least a 20% raise from the previous year? That'd make his 2014 number @ $11.796M
