Default Draft is over...

In addition to some UDFAs and veteran FAs that might come in... I think the roster for next year is starting to crystalize... and in the past people have posted very similar threads to this. I think considering the roles these players we have, we can know what to expect as a position breakdown.

The number to the left outside the parenthesis is the number of players we carry at this position that count against the 53-man roster. The number next to it is the total number of players at this position we carry including ones that don't count against the 53-man roster, as well as players at other positions that can play that position.
I wouldn't be surprised if we carry:

Offense:

2(3) QBs - Peyton Manning-Brock Osweiler-Zac Dysert. With Zac in as the emergency QB, so he doesn't take up a roster space on the 53 man roster

4 RBs - Montee Ball-Willis McGahee-Knowshon Moreno-Ronnie Hilman... RB by committee, Hilman the spel, Moreno the 3rd-down back, and Ball and McGahee getting the bulk of the carries. *Also see Jacob Hester under STers.

4 TEs - Jacob Tamme-Joel Dreesen-Virgil Green-Julius Thomas yup, just as many TEs and RBs in this system. There will be fewer dual-TE packages with Welker in the mix.

4 (5) WRs - Eric Decker-Demariyus Thomas-Wes Welker-Tavarres King. King makes the roster as a depth guy. We will sign PS guys as injuries dictate, but this is more of a three-set offense that uses a lot of TEs. Matt Willis is a fringe guy who might be called upon in the case of injury. *Also see Trindon Holliday under STers.

7 (8) OLs - Ryan Clady-Zane Beadles-JD Walton-Louis Vasquez-Orlando Franklin-Manny Ramirez-Vinston Painter-(Chris Kuper-PUP, doesn't count against the roster count). Most teams only carry 7 OLs these days and expect the two reserves (Painter, Ramirez) to be able to play multiple positions.

That's 21 offensive players that count against the 53-man limit

Defense:

8 (9) DL Robert Ayers-Sly Williams-Terrance Knighton-Derek Wolfe-Kevin Vickerson-Mitch Unrein-Q.Smith and M.Jackson OR J.Beal. Jackson I believe is still eligible for the p-squad. I'm expecting something from Ayers this year... and I think Williams plays 60+ percent of snaps. Pretty versatile group here with a lot of options. *Phillips is a depth guy at LBer and will play DL, too.

6 (8) LBers - Von-Irving-Wood-Trevathan-Johnson-Phillips. Doesn't need too much explanation. Trevathan was surprisingly versatile last year, Philips will back up Von and see action at RDE. *Also see Stewart under STers. **Joe Mays might make the team as a PUP,and get cut week 6 if he's not needed once his spot on the roster counts against the 53.

9 (10) DBs - Champ-Q.Carter-R.Moore-DRC-Harris-T.Carter-Adams-Bolden-Webster. This seems like a ton of DBs, but the Broncos ran out of the nickel a ton last year, and we have the present and the future on the team, ad luckily a lot of these guys can play any DB position (Champ, Webster, Harris) *Also see Bruton under STers.
That's 23 Defensive players that count against the 53-man limit

Special teams:

7: Prater-Colquitt-Brewer-Holliday-Bruton-Stewart-Hester. Gottta have you des guys like Prater, Colquitt and Brewer. Holliday will return kicks and see rare spot duty at WR. Bruton and Stewart need no explanation, though they provide depth at SS and ILB, respectively. Finally, Hester played fairly well at ST, and he fills a need at FB and 5th string/reserve running back.

That's 7 designated STers that count against the 53-man limit

Hmmm that's 51... and we get two more guys... who will the be? Probably O-line and WR for depth.

Blake beats out Manny out for the back up guard spot. He can play center as well. I would like to see Denver flip Manny for a draft pick to SD.

QB (3): Manning, Osweiler, Dysert (Kept 3 last year, will keep 3 again)

RB-FB (5): M Ball, Hillman, Hester, Moreno, L Ball (Mcgahee is more expensive than Moreno, neither has ST ability so one will get cut, L Ball makes it as a ST player)

WR (5): Decker, Thomas, Welker, King, Caldwell

TE (4): Same as last year

OL (8): Clady, Franklin, Vasquez, Beadles, Walton, Painter, Kuper, Blake (Blake is the utility backup, Kuper will be in a fight with Beadles to start at LG and if injury happens to a tackle Beadles will kick out to tackle)

25 of 53 on offense

S (4): Carter, Moore, Bruton, Ihenacho (I think Duke makes it out of camp, the 2 million saving on cutting Adams who wasn't impressive last year can't be discounted as a factor)

CB: (6): Bailey, Harris, Rodgers-Cromartie, Bolden, Webster, Carter (CBs are worth their weight in gold these days)

LB (6): Miller, Woodyard, Irving, Philips, Trevathan, Bradley (Miller, Woodyard, Irving will start, Philips will back up Von and play pass rush specialist, Trevathan will sub with Woodyard and Bradley with Irving)

DE (4): Ayers, Wolfe, Smith, Jackson (Ayers and Wolfe are starters, Smith will sub with Ayers and Jackson with Wolfe)

DT (4): Knighton, Vickerson, Unrein, Williams (Porkchop and Vickerson will start, Williams will play some rotation but mostly in nickel situations next to Wolfe and Unrein will sub in base D)

24 of 53 on defense

ST: Prater, Colquitt, Brewer and Holliday

Like this roster. My two cents: while I also can't wait to see Adams get cut, since we didn't actually upgrade that position I think he sticks. While Carter has the potential to be better, he is still an unknown coming back from injury. Plus, we could always use a vet back there. My guess is we move on from him but next season. And last, if history is an indication, an UFA or 2 will make the 53 roster. I think we have one of the longest streaks (consecutive years for a rookie) of a UFA making our 53 man roster. That will surely change the depth chart a bit. Other than that, love the team!

Yeah I think McGahee getting cut an L.Ball making the team is a real possibility.

Lance ball will make the team. I hope Moreno is gone.

Wouldn't be surprised to see us bring in a TE somewhere so we can cut Thomas. He hasn't shown anything

McGahee is getting cut. Knowshon will stick around in case Montee gets hurt, but will have the exact same role as last year. He'll be inactive until Hillman or Ball get hurt.

Malik Jackson is not going to the practice squad. Why do you suddenly like Beal over him? Beal WAS on the PS last year. Jackson actually got real snaps.

We went into the draft in part to improve depth so some of these guys from last year are not going to make the team, Beal is probably one of them.

I agree. I think Jackson absolutely makes the 53 man roster though.

I hope he makes it (based on the fact that I thought he looked good in the Preseason last year) but I think it's faaaaaaaar from "absolute" that he does.

He's in the tenuous position that a lot of other fringe players are in when you're on a competitive team--the make or break will be based on performance in TC and the preseason. When you're drafted late, the "pick investment" doesn't mean anything beyond year one, and even then it's weak.

Jackson was stealing snaps from Ayers at the end of last season.

So switch Beal with Jackson. I might have gotten the names mixed up... what can you do? We're talking about a 3rd-string lineman from last year.

I was going to say Jackson looked good in camp and was earning playing time by the end of the year. Unless he's regressed, look for him to take another step forward this season.

The Broncos signed Welker. Stokely was on a one year deal and they haven't signed him yet. They also just drafted and signed some college receivers. I don't think they are looking for someone who plays 25% of the snaps who also doesn't play special teams who is over 35. I think Welker will fill his roll and more.

I think some of you are being way too optimistic with our late round guys making the final roster. Painter is possibly more raw than Blake was, therefore I can see him getting a "finger" injury in the last pre-season game and he goes on IR.

I hope Q. Smith & King make it, but Smith is still iffy with the Acl, and King is a bit raw, so his status may depend on whether or not the light bulb goes on for Caldwell. Also, I think the signing of Phillips makes Q a little less important for this year. As I said, I hope they contribute this year, but it wouldn't surprise me if they get that mysterious injury in per-season.

Webster better, and will, make it to the final roster. If he doesn't, there may be rioting in the streets of Denver.
