Default Holocaust Memorial Day

to all orangemane members who are Jewish - I know I will never forget.

The full name of the day commemorating the victims of the Holocaust is “Yom Hashoah Ve-Hagevurah”— in Hebrew literally translated as the "Day of (remembrance of) the Holocaust and the Heroism." It is marked on the 27th day in the month of Nisan — a week after the end of the Passover holiday and a week before Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day for Israel's fallen soldiers). It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.

Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) has begun this evening in Israel. Tonight and tomorrow, we will remember 6 million Jews, who perished in the Holocaust by Nazi Germany. Tomorrow at 10:00 AM (Israel time zone), sirens will be sounded throughout Israel for two minutes. During this time, people cease from action and stand at attention.

I just went and saw that movie Nicky's family yesterday at the Harkins. Now that guy was a stud. What a humanitarian. Never even wanted the recognition for what he did.

It's a sad moment in history. There's still people that resent the Jews having any power, it's kind of ridiculous. They've been the most hunted people on earth for a long time, but still persevered. I admire them for fighting back and creating Israel. Israelis are some of the best fighters on the entire planet, you have to admire that.

I recently found out my great grandfather was Jewish and converted to Catholicism. His sister was still Jewish and got caught and killed. They threw her body over to the Polish border. She was part of the millions that died in the holocaust.

Pretty sure I have largely Jewish ancestry on my mom's side but it gets confusing (Spain, the inquisition and all that). You don't have to be Jewish to remember arguably the worst period in human history.

I'm in Berlin now where reminders are strong. Perhaps it's appropriate that last night I tripped on two metal stubs popping out of the ground in front of an ordinary building. I look and see the names of two people that were deported and killed in the holocaust. The trilling is deliberate. It's a reminder. I liked that.

RIP to the millions - jews, gays, gypsies, mentally handicapped, political opponents and others.

Everyone should read Viktor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning."

And rep, Chris, for pointing out all the other minorities who were sent.

You forgot blacks, racist.

(not srs)

I view this solemn day in history as a reminder that genocide isn't over... In 2013. That's completely unacceptable.

NK is continuing the Holocaust tradition, of its own people no less.

Also, it appears Muslims are continuing the tradition by ethnic cleansing of Christian, Jew and other non-believing infidels.

Never forget.

RIP to all those who were victims of the Nazi eugenic machine.

This is a variation (many exist) by Martin Niemoller about what had happened. Touching.

Martin Niemoller:

Als die Nazis die Kommunisten holten,
habe ich geschwiegen,
ich war ja kein Kommunist.

Als sie die Sozialdemokraten einsperrten,
habe ich geschwiegen,
ich war ja kein Sozialdemokrat.

Als sie die Gewerkschafter holten,
habe ich geschwiegen,
ich war ja kein Gewerkschafter.

Als sie die Juden holten,
habe ich nicht protestiert,
ich war ja kein Jude.

Als sie mich holten,
gab es keinen mehr,
der protestieren konnte.

Quote:
First they came for the Communists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Communist.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.
