In support of slack

An excerpt of an excerpt from the above:

Quote:
At the moment, probably the most pressing need is simply to slow down the engines of productivity. This might seem a strange thing to say — our knee-jerk reaction to every crisis is to assume the solution is for everyone to work even more, though of course, this kind of reaction is really precisely the problem—but if you consider the overall state of the world, the conclusion becomes obvious. We seem to be facing two insoluble problems. On the one hand, we have witnessed an endless series of global debt crises, which have grown only more and more severe since the seventies, to the point where the overall burden of debt—sovereign, municipal, corporate, personal—is obviously unsustainable. On the other, we have an ecological crisis, a galloping process of climate change that is threatening to throw the entire planet into drought, floods, chaos, starvation, and war. The two might seem unrelated. But ultimately they are the same. What is debt, after all, but the promise of future productivity? Saying that global debt levels keep rising is simply another way of saying that, as a collectivity, human beings are promising each other to produce an even greater volume of goods and services in the future than they are creating now. But even current levels are clearly unsustainable. They are precisely what’s destroying the planet, at an ever-increasing pace.

**** slack and let govt handle it? Thats the liberal ****ing agenda right there in a nutshell. Feel guilty about using more resources then other countries, stop doing that so we can cool the earth. Oh and live a simplier life you dont need to heat your pool, have an RV, have a boat and a muscle car. All you need is you Chevy Volt, your govt healthcare card, your shotgun and some solar panels on your roof.

America is better positioned to survive drought. Hell drought could finally get rid of all the people where our oil is.

Figures. The right-wingers don't even get it.

They don't even understand that "sustainable growth" is an oxymoron.

Arithmetic, Population and Energy - a talk by Al Bartlett

He's from CU, so you can dismiss him as a quasi-Marxist quack. Right?

Well there are a lot of such quacks there, but that doesn't make them all quacks. I would say it makes them more likely than average to be quasi-Marxist quacks.

Would love to see my competitors slow down their productivity for the good of the economy and the world. They need to read this, and apply the message in their business model.

You walked right into it.

As expected.

You think math is a quasi-Marxist trick.

Who knew that the exponential function had its roots in Marxist/Leninist ideology, eh?

Interesting problem, isn't it? Humanity has relentless drive and no plan. We're running at full speed toward no destination. What will success look like when we achieve it? We don't have a clue. Do you see why I use the Alice in Wonderland metaphor so much?

“Begin at the beginning," the King said, very gravely, "and go on till you come to the end: then stop.”

“Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

“But I don’t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad."
"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.”

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to."
"I don't much care where –"
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go.”

Excellent article, BTW. It reminds me of the epiphany of Ebenezer Scrooge.

An example of rightard mentality:

"We are the greatest country on earth! USA! USA!"

"Why should we clean up the environment? other countries aren't doing it!"

Interesting classroom exercise but not realistic or economically feasible.

My government? Stroll over and join the party? You are making a lot of assumptions about me. Is it okay for me to assume that you are an idiot, mouthbreather, and hopefully you haven't and can't reproduce?
