Default Sequestration Cause for Critical Funding Cut

Feds Spend $1.5 Million to Study Why Lesbians Are Fat

(CNSNews.com) – The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded $1.5 million to study biological and social factors for why “three-quarters” of lesbians are obese and why gay males are not, calling it an issue of “high public-health significance."

However, the NICHD said the future of the project is uncertain because of the sequester--automatic spending cuts that took effect on March 1.

"The NIH is currently assessing the impact on funding due to sequestration," said Robert Bock, Press Officer for the NICHD. "It is not possible to say how this (or any other NIH grant) will be affected in the long term beyond the 90 percent funding levels already in place."

BWH first received a $778,622 grant for the study in 2011, followed by a $741,378 grant in 2012, totaling $1,520,000. The project has the potential to be a five-year study.

Fair complaint of wasted money studying obesity. Unfair characterization of the study, as it studies all sexual orientations in regards to obesity.

Last year the NIH studied phone calls to kids and how they affected obesity on kids, spending $750,000.

Since we are the probably the most obese country in the world and obesity is a major drag on our health care costs, doesn't it make sense to study it?

Yes it does but..........do you really think we don't know why people are obese. I know why i get fat its because I drink too much beer, eat too many pizzas, and don't work out enough. When I eat better and try to be more active it comes off.

We sort of know why people are fat do we really need to spend a ton of money studying it? Or would that money be better spent on athletics in schools, trainers to go in and show kids how to work out, more PE at school etc etc.

Now if they want to spend money on researching drugs that may help people not be obese I guess i can see that being worth it also.

So I guess i answered yes, but this study seems sort of stupid.

No it doesn't make sense to borrow money from the Chinese to study why “three-quarters” of lesbians are obese and why gay males are not.

It's a fact of life that most lesbians are fat ....... deal with it. Maybe we should study the possibility of a link between lesbians and 44 once Big Gulps or it could be eating at the "Y" is a major cause of obesity.

Males are more attracted to looks. That's why the porn industry is directed at men. That's probably why straight women try harder to stay visually attractive. Just my 2˘, and the gov will spend 1.5 million to confirm this.

Taxpayers foot bill for GOP leaders' coffee, catering

KUSA - Members of Congress and their staffs are a hungry and thirsty bunch, and taxpayers are picking up the tab for some meals and java jolts.

The Washington Guardian, a government watchdog journalism group, obtained government reports showing Congressional office spending for the last three months of 2012. It includes eye-popping numbers for Republican leaders food and drinks, at the same time they were using tough rhetoric about cutbacks and sequestration.

"House leaders spent thousands of dollars at Harris Teeter, Whole Foods, Joe Ragan's Coffee Supplies, Dunkin' Donuts, PF Chang's, Qdoba Mexican Grill and Taylor Gourmet, just to name a few," Washington Guardian Reporter Sara Carter said.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) ordered $2,200 in coffee supplies during the month of November. Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) office racked up the $2,500 bill for Qdoba.

Members of Congress also spend money on water for both their Capitol Hill offices and offices in their home states. For example, the seven House members from Colorado spent $1,700 combined on water over three months. If you extrapolate that number, it could cost as much as $500,000 a year to provide bottled water, water coolers or filtration services for all 435 members of the House of Representatives.

Emails seeking comment from Speaker Boehner and Majority Whip McCarthy's offices received no response.

A check of expenditure reports for Democratic U.S. House leaders showed they often used a union caterer called CapitolHost. Their overall food and beverage expenses were significantly less than their Republican counterparts. Here's a breakdown:

Rep. John Boehner - House Speaker (R) - $11,225
Rep. Kevin McCarthy Majority Whip (R) - $9,789
Rep. Nancy Pelosi - Minority Leader (D) - $3,510
Rep. Eric Cantor -Majority Leader (R) - $2,971
Rep. Steny Hoyer - Minority Whip (D) - $1,795

Yeah, a sequester Republicans tripped over themselves voting for.

It's Obama's fault Rethugs obstructed & forced the sequester to happen.

You're joking, right?

Hope so. The annual total for US military spending is > a $trillion -- an obscene number.

BS he should have had a plan for if it happened instead of acting like it was some Repub problem he had nothing to do with. Whats funny is we have to cut more. These sequester cuts just a little scratch on their waste.

You cut the money, then tell the dept to do the same job give the same service. MAKE IT WORK. People in govt can work harder trust me. They can eliminate waste and tighten the belt. The sequester was a good thing Obama should be taking credit for it IMO. He cut spending, he raised taxes, he ended the war, hell he's doing better because of the sequester IMO. Sure he lost out getting taxes as high as he wanted but that is what compromise is all about. If he was smart he would move on to corp tax reform and immigration and get his 2nd term agenda on track. This gun control nonesense just a loser of an issue to try and make voters happy on.

That would mean you'd have to supply the poor with good quality nutrition at costs they can afford. Until you do that, they'll keep buying the megabox of mac and cheese at the megastore. It's all they can afford. Then, when they get fat and diseased they go to the ER because they're not insured.

And here comes some as yet unnamed conservative with no experience in destitution (different from prostitution guys!) saying its not hat expensive to get healthy food, and that the time it takes to prepare said food isn't significantly longer than the mega box of Mac and cheese.

You can eat healthy at an extremely affordable price. I know I do.

I'm guessing the demands on time and budget for a single male in his 20s might be different than that of a family of four or more, particularly if both parents are working. I know they are a lot different for me now with a wife and two kids than when I was single in college. I can only imagine how much more difficult it would be for us if we had less money or if both of us worked. Or if, heaven forbid, something happened to one of us and the other had to raise the kids by themselves. Sorry, it's just cheaper and easier to feed yourselves crap.

But pull yourselves up by your bootstraps though, right?

Edit: And this is all working from the backgrounds that you and I have. I don't know about you, but I come from a large middle class family. I had a safety net. If not for family and friends that I was born with through no action of my own, I would have been homeless no fewer than twice. There is a significant portion of the population who grow up with no safety net. They are the ones liberals are talking about when we say there is NO equality of opportunity. Meanwhile, conservatives who have never known poverty say things like "God helps those who help themselves" without realizing the poor have no boots, let alone straps.

Then they get angry when there are no perceived results and blame the poor themselves, and say things like "'Murrica guarantees equal opportunity, NOT equal results." They don't even understand the problem.
