Of course we would love Doom back but, as post says, let's assume he's not.

I think Wolfe and Ayers will take big strides this year, provided they get the field time. I also want to see what Jackson has. I think he showed some good things last preseason and a year in the NFL film rooms, better coaching and training, I'd like to see what he has. At 6'6 290 he's a big DE and if he can rush the passer, we've got something. We still draft several players along the DL. I'd say a DT, a DE a few RB's and a fast WR who can spell Thomas and Decker.

If the drafted WR can't spell Thomas or Decker, he needs to go back to school. Now spelling Demaryius can be a challenge, so if they can do that, a big plus!

I think that's where the team goes. Doom isn't coming back. Promote from within, Get some new blood in here and see what happens.

If he's gone, then you look, in no particular order, at Umenyiora, Freeney, Seymour & Abraham and see which best fits the scheme and the cap.

This is my question too. It would be great if he could rise to the occasion.

Seymour has already stated he's playing for big cash or not at all. So he's out.

i say Freeney. similar playing style to Doom so nothing in scheme changes. he wants to play with Peyton again so may come on a modest salary which will leave us money to use on late free agent signings and post draft cuts

Probably Freeney on a 1 year $4M deal. Either that, or draft the best pass-rushing 3-4 OLB we can find this year.

i've been high on him since we drafted him. saw him as more of a DT who flexes out to DE at times than a pure DE though. but we do run a bit of a hybrid/multiple D so it doesn't truly matter.

We finally agree! I say both. Don't reach for the draftable player, but if he's the best avail, take.

With a defensive front comprised of:

Jackson-Knighton-Vickerson-Wolfe

You will control the LOS, because thats 1260lbs of Bronco to move. I saw in the Doom thread that Werners stock is dropping, does anyone know if this is true?

With 30 days out or so everyone draft "stock" is all over the board at this point.

That being said, I would rather we make a deal with doom.
We had one the best defenses last year.. Why would we go full 3-4? We do not have the players for it esp. Since Doom and DJ are gone.

Get Abraham and trade back our first and grab dt and de or MLB in the seconds and third rounds

Sounds like a good plan.

Wouldn't mind picking up a kick-ass Center, like Barrett Jones along the way, either.

Get a bandaid one year rent a retread in the mold of Freeney, Abraham, or OSI and draft a guy. Abraham has been productive still even though he is getting a little long in the tooth.

Agreed, but he is 35, Freeney 33. At that age Injury concerns limit the amount you can pay, because you cannot expect a full season out of anyone. We probably won't offer over 2.5 - 3 million for either one on one year deals. And you can't give too many performance incentives either, unless they are carefully written to require some limited injury time also. A guy who gets 8 sacks in the first 11 games and then is out for the year doesn't help come playoff time. Performance incentives for Playoff games could be large, regular season not so much.

Alot depends on what offers Doom receives. If he can't get what we offerred it's going to end up in court.

That is an utter total lie. Sure, maybe when you are 35 and get 10 sacks you could say he is playing at a "high" level. But if you look into his year, you will find that he only had sacks in 7 games (invisible in the sack department for most than half the season), had only more than 1.0 sacks in 2 games... 2 against the awful Ol of the Raiders and 2 against an even worst OL in the Cardinals. By the way... 2 games are already half his season total.

If a team like ATL that is in a imminent push for the SB lets him go, and a team as needy and with a history with signing role specific vets like the Pats lets him leave NE without a contract that should tell you anything you need to know.

doom put up most of his production against terrible teams too. And only had a sack or more in 9 games. Plus Abraham is better against the run, despite his age.

Freeney is probably still better at rushing the passer though. But he was invisible last season, and has struggled in his career on grass (according to colts fans)

I think Jeremy Beal will factor into the rotation this year

Other than being an OU homer, what makes you think a guy who hasn't even been able to get on the field in 2 years will be able to make us forget about losing Dumervil?

I believe they were pretty high on him last preseason with another year of work he could be a lot better and no one is saying anyone will make them forget about Doom

Doom had the worst run stop % of almost all the dends in the league. It may be only Denver that see's him as a 3 down player. Other teams may not be interested in trying to accomadate his poor run defense.

I think its worth it because he makes some big plays when given the chances but a lot of teams won't. Why? Because he only makes a handful of run stops a yr.
