Berkshire Hathaway - The Orange Mane

Finance guys (and gals) - I was wondering what you all thought of Berkshire Hathaway. I just had a second interview with them, and I think I might get an offer as an actuary.

It's Buffet's company and I hear great things, like it can totally propel a career. One of my grad school Profs. said when he was my age, "I would have cleaned Buffett's carpets for a living to get in with BHHC, and I'm only half-joking."

I'd have to move to Nebraska, which means I'd have to curb my ski habit, put my season tixs up on exchange, leave CU-Leeds and finish my MBA at.... ugh... the University of Nebraska.

Worth it?

congrats. i visited buffett on a class trip on 2006, i would suspect it would be a very long steady path to success. is it with berk, or geico, some other insurance co...?

BHHC... Berkshire Hathaway has their own commercial insurance that is separate from Geico.

They also sell put insurance (strike option buyouts) on volatile stock securities - basically what made Buffet the richest man in the world.

Lincoln is a good place. You would enjoy it there. U of N is a good school. You have plenty of time in life to hit the slopes. Hope you get it man!

It's your career. Far more important....and you could getaway to Colorado maybe a weekend a month or whatever.

Plus I'm sure DB will gladly invite you to his Cornhusker tailgates at the stadium. Ok...maybe not.....but getting in with a great company is a great idea long term. Who know you may be able to transfer to other offices in the company a few years down the line. The professional student gig I'm sure is fun and you almost get laid frequently however I think when you get into a real actual gig that has great financial and resume potential you will end up enjoying that far more.

I agree with Socal. While there will be other offers, if you're seriously considering turning down a good job with a company you obviously feel good about because you want to ski, you need to grow up. Unless skiing is your life, in which case I would ask why you aren't pursuing a career that is ski related...

You can sky in Honey Creek, IA which is 1 and 20 away from Lincoln. Sundown Mountain is 6 hours away from Lincoln. Seven Oak is 3 hours and 20 minutes away from Lincoln.

Those are the times if you are not attacked in your wagon by the savages that roam these lands.

Welcome to adulthood! You'll be making these kinds of choices for the rest of your life. I agree with the others though, your career starts now and not many people get to start at a place like that.

I have no idea what kind of company Berkshire is to work for, but as other have said, it would look great on your resume' to work for them.

True story: about thirty some-odd years ago in the early eighties I joined a local investment club w/ my dad to get into investing. I was in my early 20's and was always a good saver, but had never invested with risk until then.

On an educational day, the club leader was talking about good companies and started talking at length about Buffett and his company Berkshire Hathaway. It all sounded good until he mentioned that the price of the stock was about $2000 each! That is a lot of money now, think of what that price was over 30 yrs ago.

Well, back then, I didn't understand that the price of a stock has nothing to do with the fact on whether it is over-valued or not. All I saw is the $2000 price tag and it seemed outrageous to me.

And the thing is, I could have bought at least 5 shares with my savings, but didn't. Anyway, the stock closed at $155,210 a share today. Oh well, you live and learn.

Take the job, don't be foolish because of a hobby.

Nobody wants to live in Nebraska. But nothing in life is without compromise, and sometimes you've got to sacrifice a bit to get where you're going.

Plus, Lincoln is a pretty cool town, in spite of itself.
