Most baseball pundits believe the Detroit Tigers paid too much for Anibal Sanchez. But they also believe that was the price they had to make if they were serious about winning now. Sanchez agreed to a 5-year, $80-million contract with Detroit on Friday, equaling $16 million per season. His career numbers aren't exactly stellar -- 48-51 with a 3.75 ERA -- but the right-hander's value skyrocketed after posting a 1.77 ERA in three postseason starts and a 2.43 ERA in the month of September for the Tigers.

The New York Yankees outfield is thought to be set now with the re-signing of Ichiro Suzuki, but Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that the team is "quietly interested" in free-agent center fielder Michael Bourn.

Bourn, largely considered the best center fielder on the market, has not received the influx of interest that analysts thought he would receive early on this winter.

An outfield of Bourn, Brett Gardner/Ichiro and Curtis Granderson would probably represent one of the fastest outfields in the majors, and the defense of Gardner and Bourn would represent a huge boost for the Yankees.

This would likely relegate Granderson to a corner outfield spot—a spot where he should have been for the past couple of seasons...

there is no way in hell they sign Bourn. they still have to re-sign Cano and make a viable team after this season that can stay under the luxury tax threshold.
Bourn and Cano would command 90+ mil deals each. no way they get under the tax with a viable WS contending team for 2014.

Honestly, even if Victor Martinez has a similar year from 2 seasons ago I still think the Angels and Jays will finish with a better record. I hope I'm wrong, I just really like that Jays team now.

Glad to have him off the White Sox....with Ozzie Guillen and A.J. Pierzynski gone, the White Sox are a lot harder to dislike as much as I do.

Outfielder Nick Swisher has agreed to a contract with the Cleveland Indians, he confirmed on his Twitter account.

A source told ESPN that Swisher agreed to a four-year, $56 million contract that also includes a $14 million option for a fifth season that will "easily vest, making the potential total value of the contract $70 million.

That's an incredible amount of money for a tier two guy like Swisher.

A scourge to umpires, goad to his players and a delight to fans, Earl Weaver was among the winningest managers in the history of major-league baseball. In his 17 years as chief helmsman of the Baltimore Orioles, his teams won 1,480 games, four American League championships and the 1970 World Series.

Mr. Weaver died Jan. 18 while on a cruise, the team announced. He was of 82. The cause and other details of his death were not immediately known.
