Snowmass archaeological dig, Nova program - The Orange Mane

OT, but did anybody see this? It was a nice program, but they featured a really creepy old dude, Daniel Fisher.

That dude creeped me out. He's talking about "mass die-offs (smile), you can see how a whole Mastodon family died (smile), they all died right here (smile), you can see all their bones (smile), they all came here at one time and died (smile)"

I've been around some academics that loved their work, but this guy Daniel Fisher is creepy. Proctologist kind of creepy, but in an archaeological kind of way.

There's a lot of amazing stuff around Snowmass, actually. The description of this guy smiling every other few words reminds me of Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie. I resent you for making me think of that.

Seismic activity over about a 150,000 year period. The watering hole was there for all that time, but there was seismic activity that caught some groups (smile) in liquefaction (smile) once every few thousand years (smile).

Sand liquefaction was the explanation, as a result of seismic activity.

What the hell man, it is kind of interesting. Only a few archeaological sites like this exist, and here it is at about 9000 ft in Colorado discovered because they were expanding a reservoir for the Aspen ski resort.

Dang watering hole had been there for over 150,000 years. The same watering hole.

Camels were there, wolves as big as bears, bears 11 feet tall, mammoths, mastodons, sloths as big as grizzlies, all there in the clay.

Think about how many animals have existed on Earth... I wonder what percentage survive in some form to be found at a later date. It must be an incredibly minuscule number of animals. I think we underestimate how much history could just completely disappear and we have no record of it whatsoever. Entire eras could be literally wiped off the face of the Earth because of global catastrophes.

Kind of cool that was a watering hole for 150,000 years that still exists to this day. It was an existing reservoir that they wanted to expand.

Yup. Camels, horses, sloths disappeared from North America. They all ended up elsewhere surviving. How, why, nobody really knows. Mastodons and Mammoths disappeared entirely, nobody really knows why. The saber tooth cat, etc, same deal.

Kirk Johnson coordinated this Snowmass dig. He was a big shot in Colorado, was the VP of the Denver Museum of Natural Science. He's been around, has all the credentials, now he's been appointed to the Smithsonian as the Director of Natural History.

The front range of Colorado has produced some excellent fossil finds, and all around ancient watering holes. Two in the last 50 years on the front range have come from private land owners trying to expand natural springs to make a reservoir. They dug and found bones, those springs were ancient watering holes that still existed.

I meant to say that I hate offseasons threads in January. Meaning we failed at not getting to the Super Bowl. Sorry about that. MacGruder part still stands.

MacGruder, obviously anti Gravity had a key in their deaths.
