Retired Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf dies Posted: 12/27/2012 05:23:42 PM MST Updated: 12/27/2012 06:25:43 PM MST By Lolita C. Baldor and Richard Pyle The Associated Press FILE - In this Jan. 12, 1991 file photo, Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf stands at ease with his tank troops during Operation Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia. Schwarzkopf died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012 in Tampa, Fla. He was 78. (AP Photo/Bob Daugherty, File) WASHINGTON - Retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, who topped an illustrious military career by commanding the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's forces out of Kuwait in 1991 but kept a low public profile in controversies over the second Gulf War against Iraq, died Thursday. He was 78. Schwarzkopf died in Tampa, Fla., where he had lived in retirement, according to a U.S. official, who was not authorized to release the information publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. A much-decorated combat soldier in Vietnam, Schwarzkopf was known popularly as "Stormin' Norman" for a notoriously explosive temper. He served in his last military assignment in Tampa as commander-in-chief of U.S. Central Command, the headquarters responsible for U.S. military and security concerns in nearly 20 countries from the eastern Mediterranean and Africa to Pakistan. Schwarzkopf became "CINC-Centcom" in 1988 and when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait three years later to punish it for allegedly stealing Iraqi oil reserves, he commanded Operation Desert Storm, the coalition of some 30 countries organized by President George H.W. Bush that succeeded in driving the Iraqis out. Read more: Retired Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf dies - The Denver Post http://www.denverpost.com/breakingne...#ixzz2GJCd8ktM |

Many of us watched him on CNN in the early 90's during the Iraq war. The most famous General since WWII

Really had a brilliant strategy in the Gulf War. Iraqi thought our main forces were coming from the south from Kuwait, he had used them as a diversion while he sent the bulk of the armored cavalry around their flank through the desert and hit them hard on from the rear. This after 100 days of air bombing to take out their communications and ability to see what he was doing.
Brilliant tactician and one of the reasons (along with superior firepower and highly trained military personnel) that we had so few casualties in that war. |

A fine tactician, a good honorable man, exemplified the best of the US Officer corps.
Unlike some of the scumbags who are running things now. RIP! |

He was the Brigade Commander when I was in Germany in the late 70's early 80's. Never had the honor of meeting him, but sure as hell respect him. RIP General.

Really all you need to know is he made it to 4-STARS and theater level command without playing KISS A__ political games! Hard to do in this modern world, of "quid pro quo"!
