Loyal dogs, get aggressive sometimes with outsiders. I prefer Labs.

I own two.
Male is a lovebug. Not brilliant, but loyal. Wouldn't harm a fly. Wishes his humans would never leave the house. Big. Female is brilliant. Good watchdog. Potentially aggressive. Would kill to defend me or my daughter. Lots of ear infections as a senior citizen. (had to go to the vet tonight for another bout...has a cone on now...the entire place considers her a sweetheart, but I'm always wary) She would have made a great police or seeing-eye dog. Total focus. (the former I got as a senior citizen from the Dumb Friends League and the latter I've owned since she was a 3-month old puppy, and who has never been trained to be a watchdog...it's just "in her") Last edited by TNF; 11-26-2012 at 09:02 PM.. |

I recommend a book called "The Art of Raising a Puppy" by The Monks of New Skete.
It is a great book for anyone who wants to learn the proper way to raise a puppy, but particularly for you because the dogs these monks raise are German Shepherds. Absolutely read this book asap. |

Make sure you socialize them really well when they are young.

In the last two months, I had to put both my two old timers to sleep. Not a good time. One was so old and senile he could no longer get up. The other came down with a malignant cancer. I've looked into shepards. I've always liked them. They're smart, but sometimes nippy. But I think I'm going to go with something a little bit more mellow this time. My wife wants a french bulldog, while I'm more inclined to get a retriever or a lab. That would be an odd mix, but what the hell? Should be fun. Might throw in a couple of kittens as well.

I have a two year old English bulldog that I have ha since he was a puppy. I take him to the dog park almost everyday, so it shouldn't be a problem letting the little fella meet new people and dogs

I have a White German Shepherd. He's a great dog. Bit of a goofball. Was very shy as a pup and remains reserved around strangers. Doesn't bark very much but will whine like crazy to get his point across. Does an insane happy dance every time I come home from work. Was easy to house break. Leash training.....less so. Get your dog lots of chew toys and keep your counters clear of anything you don't want him to have.
