everytime ive been asked about healthcare in canada, first thing i say is you will need more doctors, as soon as something is free ( or appears to be free) people that normally wouldn't go to the doctors will.

If you had a cough, would you go see a Dr if it was going to cost you 50 bucks for a visit ? how about 20 ? what if it was free ? Personally my time is much to valuable to waste sitting in a office for an hour just to have adoc tell me to drink some Oj and get some rest, which is what a good number of people in the ER in Canada are there for.

I think a combination of our 2 systems would work quite well, i dont like the fact that in my system the government is the only provider, there is no reason to try and keep costs down, they have a blank cheque, I also dont like the idea of a company driven by profits deciding if i qualify for a treatment based on the bottom line. Somewhere in the middle lies a good system.

Well the thread is getting derailed but my thoughts:

I moved to Florida about a year and a half ago and I was so sick of the waits to see a doctor, I was ready to go off my medicine and say F it. The wife insisted we keep trying and I've now found a PA and I couldn't be happier with her. She's thorough, timely, and in a world where all they do is evaluate me and send me to a specialist (if needed) based on a flow chart, I've long wondered why the person needed to be an MD.

I sit in lecture halls all the time filled with 200+ people that want to become doctors but only a very small fraction ever will. Make the PA route more attractive by making them the first line of service in the medical industry and everyone wins. The only ones who would have an issue are the crybabies that think the worst MD is still better than the best PA.

Combine some of this with things like banning drug companies from advertising, and you may be on to something.

"Ask your doctor about..." No, tell your doctor your symptoms. It's more than likely all in your head, or at the very least not what the makers of Lunesta want you to believe.
