Default Fast-food chain to charge 5% Obamacare Surcharge

Denny's to charge 5% 'Obamacare surcharge' and cut employee hours to 28 from 40 to deal with cost of legislation

President Obama's election victory ensured his Affordable Care Act would remain the centerpiece of his first term in power - but that has left some business owners baulking at the extra cost Obamcare will bring.

Florida based restaurant boss John Metz, who runs approximately 40 Denny's and owns the Hurricane Grill & Wings franchise has decided to offset that by adding a five percent surcharge to customers' bills and will reduce his employees' hours.

'I think it's a terrible thing. It's ridiculous that the maximum hours we can give people is 28 hours a week instead of 40,' said Metz to the Huffington Post.
'It's going to force my employees to go out and get a second job.'

'Obviously, I'd love to cover all our employees under that insurance,' said Metz.
'But to pay $5,000 per employee would cost us $175,000 per restaurant and unfortunately, most of our restaurants don't make $175,000 a year. I can't afford it.'

Aaaaaaaaaand BS.

No Denny's restaurant in the world employs 35 full time employees.

Yet another restaurant owner making ignorant claims to shift blame on someone else other than themselves. How about you get in a different line of work, chum. Apparently restaurant ownership isn't for you, because it involves basic math.

And most of their employees aren't paid directly by the restaurant anyway, they survive on tips.

What's the server staff min wage these days? $2.00/hr**? And most are part time anyway. Of course, some "upstanding" small business owners are scummy enough to skim off the server's tips too.

Even assuming say 20 full time servers, we're talking a total of $1,600 a week (or $83,000 a year, less than a single full time white collar professional employee) in wage expenses for the bulk of their employees.

** This is also why if you don't tip, and tip well, you're a right SOB.

This is also BS, as anyone who has worked in the restaurant biz knows, one Denny's restaurant makes much more than that in one year.

Hopefully this gets spread far and wide so people can stop giving business to this clown.

I think you are confusing net profits from gross.

Certainly they do more than $ 175,000.00 in revenue a year. But with the expenses and overhead most do not make that much in profit.

The system is now set up to send workers in jobs like this to the exchanges to purchase insurance. Why is everyone getting so mad? Don't get mad brah! States are setting up exchanges where people who don't get insurance through work can go and purchase it. many of you may end up there. Don't be mad its just the new system at work.

I just keep wondering how long it will take us to get around to single payer, nationalized health care. It's only a matter of time.

A choice quote you missed from the original source.

Quote:
"If I leave the prices the same, but say on the menu that there is a 5 percent surcharge for Obamacare, customers have two choices. They can either pay it and tip 15 or 20 percent, or if they really feel so inclined, they can reduce the amount of tip they give to the server, who is the primary beneficiary of Obamacare," Metz told The Huffington Post. "Although it may sound terrible that I'm doing this, it's the only alternative. I've got to pass the cost on to the consumer."
Hell of a stand up guy. "Hey, if you don't like the extra charge just tip all these dirty poors I'm forced to employ less. Problem solved!"

What people should be asking: do we really want a race to the bottom by sponsoring any least common denominator employer like Denny's?

If we continue to sponsor a corporate model where profits are made by paying employees sub-standard wages we'll soon find that we have a nation full of sub-standard jobs with only a small fringe of the population actually living a good life.

When it gets to end of the month, which one will get paid first the cell phone bill or the insurance premium?

Sometimes, there is a only one practicable solution to a problem. If some intelligence is applied to the problem, eventually you land on it. Give it whatever political name you like.

you're advocating govt takeover of one of the largest industries. Once govt gets going they won't stop. Look how many regs Obama throws out a month.

But the average Joe still wants to be able to take his kids to Dennys where kids eat free and he can get a Grand Slam for $4.99 ........

Also this. If your point is that obamacare is just the first step towards the logical single payer govt ran system, then that means i am right and its set up for people to be forced into the exchanges. Once there is enough people there they just start eliminating choices for them. Eventually it will be check which plan you want.

plan- b- Govt
plan- c- Govt.

No. Obamacare is a bad bandaid that won't work, but might stall the inevitable for some period of time.

Exactly. If they start putting "5% Obamacare surcharge" on their receipts they are going to alienate a large number of their customers, and then further alienate their low-paid servers who may see a hit to their income. The best employees they have will feel like they're being treated like **** and will move on, and they will lose some valuable customers over the whole issue, not to mention the bad news coverage. Eventually the market sorts these kinds of things out.

Also most places will just raise prices and cut workers salaries. They won't write on the reciept 4.00 obamacare surcharge.
