Dude was one of the few studs for Detroit back in the 60s. He was a stud and smart that he jumped into broadcasting and acting after that (as many others did too).

If you want a really enjoyable read about Karras, John Gordy and the Lions back in the 60's read George Plimpton's book Mad Ducks and Bears, when as an author he was allowed to attend the Lions training camp and eventually run a play in pre season.

I think I read this in 6th or 7th grade when my father gave me the book. It was the funniest thing I'd read to that point in my life. Until you read it you won't know what a prankster Karras was.

RIP dude, you were one of the greats.

He was in a pretty good made for tv western called "Hardcase." Clint Walker was in it too.

Alex Karras was playing for the Detroit Lions when they played Denver in a pre-season game somewhere around 1965-66.

It was the first game played between the NFL & the AFL after the merger agreement had been reached. The leagues wouldn't fully merge for regular season play until 1970, but the Detroit-Denver game was the very first of any kind between the two leagues.

Alex Karras told the media he would walk back to Detroit if they lost to the Broncos.

They lost to the Broncos. A very miserable Karras flew back with his team, saying his statement was just a way to get the Lions fired up. He never lived that down and even Cosell made reference to it more than once.

We lost a wonderful talent in many more ways than football, and I'll miss him.

One of the things I remember was when he was on Johnny Carson describing Dempsey's 63 yard field goal. "What's a Dempsey" "What's he doing out there" "They're on the wrong side of the field" "He didn't make it". He had a very comical nature. RIP

I believe Denver was the first AFL team to beat an NFL team. Denver beat Detroit in the preseason, maybe, and Before the game Karras said that if Denver won he'd walk back to Detroit. Which he did not.

I always enjoyed his stories when he was on MNF or an NFL Films production.

I would stop anything I was doing to listen to Alex and Art Donavan.

Never could watch him on Webster, it was like he took the Merlin Olsen route on TV.

Alex will be missed.

One of the truly funny men in the NFL. He only went to 3 Pro Bowls but he was much better than that. Never really got his due as a player because of playing in Detroit. Some of those Detroit defensive teams in the early - mid 60s were very good. I was fortunate to see him play against Baltimore in 1967 in my first NFL game. A 17 -17 tie where Unitas was injured. He missed a whole season with Hornung for gambling.

I did too, I have to admit I couldn't finish Mad Ducks and Bears though, it was too scattered not as well written. Maybe some day I will give it another try.
