Deion dropped by and took some pre-game BP (Showalter was his manager at AA Albany when Deion was first drafted by the Yankees).

then the O's went out and hit 7 HRs on the night.

Secretly rooting for the nationals or orioles...but i am a cards fan and if last year i thought the odds were against us, this year they are doubled. We finish with a dheader with the nats and 3 game series with the reds...just for a chance to play atlanta in the wcard game.

Root for the Nats but back away from those surprising Orioles! I need my Angels to get in. They keep winning but so is everyone else. Torii Hunter hits the walk off single in the bottom of the 9th to win the game. Hunter will become the oldest player to hit .300 for his first time (who knew he never did this?) in a career in over 60 years.

I've always enjoyed watching Torii Hunter play....it seemed like he always played well against the Tigers when he played for the Twins.

I'm surprised this is the first year he has hit .300 or higher....he's come close a few times, but never hit .300.

Hope he keeps that .307 average up until the end of the year....shouldn't be a problem with a week left in the season.

Tigers jump out to a quick 4-0 lead in the 2nd inning versus the Royals.

Doug Fister is on the mound for the Tigers today.

Keep the pressure on the White Sox.

Nice to see Austin Jackson score his 100th run of the season today.

Doug Fister of the Tigers just broke the AL record by getting his 9th strikeout in a row. Had 2 strikes on the next batter but couldn't get him out on strikes to tie TOm Seaver's Major League record.

(Beat you to it SSJ).

5 to 0 Rangers. Keep knocking them around.

When that dude is on his game, he looks like a 6'8 Greg Maddux the way he locates and commands his pitches.

The Tigers score in the bottom of the 9th inning to beat the Royals 5-4.

The lead in the division is up to 1.5 games.

Unbelievable final frame. Valverde has been up and down this year, and it seems like he's been doing his best Todd Jones/Mike Henneman/every other neurotic closer the Tigers have ever had impression over the past few months. He's going to need to improve immediately if they have any hopes for going far.

Fielder has shown throughout the season that he's not just a big bat, that he can do the little things like baserunning, fielding, and shortening the swing on a 2 strike count. Anything to help the team.

And God bless Alex Avila and his bulletproof body.

The Tigers brought in Joaquin Benoit for the 9th inning today to close out the game and he gave up the game tying home run to Billy Butler.

That surprised me....they've gone with Jose Valverde all season....and he pitched an easy 9th inning for the save last night.

That dude makes my butthole clench every time they trot him out....but I was surprised they didn't bring him in to close out the game today.

NEW YORK -- R.A. Dickey became the first knuckleballer to win 20 games in more than three decades, tying his career-high with 13 strikeouts and leading the New York Mets over Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 Thursday behind David Wright's tiebreaking, three-run homer.

So was I, but as I alluded to, I guess I can kinda see why they did it..

Of course, if it hadn't worked, I'd probably be criticizing Leyland for second guessing himself, too, so there's that.

Question for you: If the Tigers make the postseason, is there a leash for Leyland next year? Or does making the playoffs after a poor first half absolve him? Personally, even if they make the playoffs, to me it's World Series next year or Leyland's gone. If they miss the playoffs, I think it's time to say goodbye. What do you think?

I'm a big Jim Leyland fan, as he grew up in NW Ohio a few miles from where I grew up and live now.

I'd like to see him come back for another year, but I wonder if after so long, the same message gets stale.

I'd love nothing more than to see him win a World Series in Detroit.

If they make the playoffs this season, he deserves another year, and if he doesn't get it done after that, I think they will make a switch.

I also remember the 12 losing seasons in a row before he took over.

Mike Ilitch has spent a lot of money and wants a World Series ring.

That's just about where I'm at. I've always been pretty impressed with him as a manager going back to the Marlins.

Seeing him win one would be awesome, and he's a big baby and so am I, so if they do win one with him, he's going to start crying, then I'm going to remember 2003 and I'm going to start crying too.

Next year they have Victor Martinez coming back. My brother and I were talking about the prospectus for 2013, and it looks pretty good as well. I don't know where contracts stand or anything like that, but middle relief and relief in general needs some attention. Offense looks about as solid as you can get; I think their only weakness may be the corners of the OF on both offense and defense, but V-Mart probably gets moved to DH, which puts Dirks, Young and Boesch in more of a position to play every day. Time will tell if Berry is ready over the long term, though it's hard to pass off his contribution this season so far as a fluke.

Detroit closer Jose Valverde was sick and unavailable.

I thought it was odd that Valverde didn't pitch the 9th inning today.

This article talks about a lot of that stuff:

Several Tigers, including Jim Leyland, could be near end of Detroit career

Robert Allen Dickey and his knuckleball! Crappy season for my Mets but enjoyed the hell of that this afternoon. Rooted as if a playoff game. Now I shift attention to my second favorite team, whoever beats the Yankees.

I remember pujols in april 2006. Hitting 14 homeruns for the month...angels need some runs! Trout has had an amazing season and would be fun to see the angels make the wc game.

So we lost and the Tigers won.........again.

Since its obviously over at this point, I want to congratulate good guys SSJ and houghtam on their division title. Good luck to you in the postseason. I think if Max Scherzer is healthy, the Tigers could do some real damage.

The White Sox lost to Tampa Bay last night.

That puts the Tigers up by 2 games in the division with 6 games left in the regular season.

If they **** it up, they have nobody to blame but themselves, as they are now in the driver's seat.

Thanks....but I'm not getting excited until they seal the deal.

There are still 6 games left and the Tigers aren't a great road team.

It's all on them if they screw it up, as they control their own destiny.

Either way, it's been an exciting race for the the division title.

The White Sox should have their manager in place for the foreseeable future.

Robin Ventura seems like a great fit.

Mike Scioscia should be fired.

And the real crime is Mike Trout will not win the MVP now.
Just absolutely criminal.
