This is ****ing stupid. How did the deficit get where it is? Why does the sole responsibility for the interest on the debt fall on him? It's yet another example of "we screwed it up, you're not cleaning it up fast enough, let us back in to fix it."

I will take this as a serious question. Just a couple of thoughts. The answer, to me, is no, but we have seen some scraps of it in history, mostly as debates. The Lincoln Douglas Debates in history were extraordinary. The only other I know of is a fictional one. A debate in a "West Wing" episode was very clear in the presentation of the issues and the specifics of how each Philosophy would address them. That "debate" still rings in my ears as a very clear delineation of the current issues, even if the whole thing was staged. To be clear, there were points on both sides of the issue. A really good clarification of the issues would actually bring most people to a middle ground, In the days when there were Republican moderates, there could be some serious, honest, fair and clean debates and campoigns, Not so much nowadays.

I cannot think of a modern campaign that was honest. Even history books detail the mean, nasty and dishonest hooliganisms that were carried out throughout the campaigns in American history. Today it is more public because of the technology.

There is, I am told, a serious "underground" campaign being waged that is bad. The comparisons of people to hitler, stalin and to other personifications of evil is unmistakably racist and hateful. I guess that is one reason why I am sensitive to the mutterings of some of our resident dimwits; they do not seem to be conscious of how racist they are.....

Reminds me of the character Paul Sorvino played in Good Fellas - Paulie. That's exactly what he does to that restaurant owner in the film. Takes over the restaurant, runs up the bills until it goes bankrupt, then torches the place and gets the insurance money.
