It will be interesting to see what happens if the Skins walk away with one of the top guys not named Andrew Luck. Barkley looks like a player Shanny could have some fun with.

This has served him well at times. His worst critics say he has often overcome bad personnel decisions with good coaching. He has made players better. And once his run-blocking schemes took hold in Denver the Broncos trampled over AFC West defenses.

But the same hubris led him to believe he could do better than what Andy Reid accomplished for a decade in Philadelphia in disguising McNabb’s stubbornness and passive-aggressive leadership. He figured with a few adjustments McNabb could be a three- or four-year bridge to that next great quarterback. This, of course, was a disaster. McNabb did not adapt to change. He struggled to run Shanahan’s offense, bouncing passes and failing to find the best receiving targets. Before the end of the first season he was banished to the bench and ultimately traded to Minnesota where he has already blown up less than two months into the season.

I could have sworn the skins had a guy by the name of Bruce Allen. I mean, Shanny's not making all the personel decisions too, right? I'm sure Shanny and Allen discuss players but if the Skins are stupid enough to elevate Shanny's authority over Allen then they get what they deserve.

Shawne Merriman’s contract gets worse
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 26, 2011, 11:25 AM EDT

The Bills have paid linebacker Shawne Merriman $6.95 million over the last season and a half for one sack and nine tackles in five games.

Amazingly, Merriman’s contract appears to get worse for the Bills.

According to a January article by Tim Graham (formerly of ESPN.com), Merriman is guaranteed another $3 million in 2012. We’ve seen it written that the Bills had some injury protection for that money, but that no longer appears to be true.

Graham wrote that Merriman’s 2012 money was guaranteed the moment he was cleared to practice this year. In essence, his new Achilles injury is viewed as different problem than his old Achilles injury. So the Bills are on the hook for it.

Merriman is due $4 million in base salary in 2012 and a $1 million roster bonus next March. We can’t imagine the Bills will give him another chance, so they will basically have to pay him $3 million to go away.

Claiming and then signing Merriman never made any sense. I’ve heard from Bills fans that they had to take a roll of the dice to get some talent. That’s insane. The Bills have done so many things right in the Gailey/Nix era, but there is no defending the Merriman contract.

It was a terrible bet the moment the contract was signed. Merriman missed 30 games between 2008-2010, including 13 last year. He has 4 sacks since 2007. He was never going to make big money on the open market. Guaranteed base salaries are for star players; Merriman was not in that kind of bargaining position.

If the Bills wanted to take a risk on Merriman, they could have waited for him to be a free agent and given him something like a 1-year, $3 million contract. That’s more money than far more productive linebackers got after the lockout.

Instead, the Bills will wind up paying almost $10 million to Merriman for one sack. That apparently includes $3 million next year, when he may no longer even be in the NFL.

I agree, he probably shouldn't shoulder all of the blame. But right or wrong coaches are often the ultimate fall guys. It will be interesting to watch this play out. This team has 6-10 or 7-9, and a last place NFC East finish, written all over it.

A little more than a week after requesting a trade, safety Chris Harris has been released by the Chicago Bears.
...
The 29-year-old Harris was a second-team All-Pro last season...

All underachieving team of first half 2011

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...sct=nfl_t11_a1

couple of former broncos here. and I think Brandon Lloyd deserved at least mention, but his current stats are about average for his career.

Coaches
• Head coach -- Andy Reid, Philadelphia: The head man on the "Dream Team'' hasn't done his finest work meshing all his new toys. Starting with the Juan Castillo promotion to defensive coordinator, it's been a shaky effort for Reid in Philly.
Dishonorable mention: Steve Spagnuolo, St. Louis

• Offensive coordinator -- Josh McDaniels, St. Louis: It was supposed to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship/working relationship between him and second-year Rams quarterback Sam Bradford. But the Rams are 0-6, and Bradford has clearly regressed.
Dishonorable mention: Brian Schottenheimer, New York Jets

• Defensive coordinator -- Larry Coyer, Indianapolis: The Colts are winless and allowing a league-worst 32.1 points per game, topped off by that 62-point surrender at New Orleans on Sunday night. Need I say more?
Dishonorable mention: Ken Flajole, St. Louis

I think Hines Ward is about done....too many young talented WRs in Pittsburgh and he has bad knees and a dented melon.

He has 981 career receptions for 11,970 yards and 85 TDs.

He is due $4 million dollars next year and there is no way the Steelers will pay that.

It would be a shame to see him bounce around with another team....like him or hate him, he is a Steeler and they should be the only team he plays for....kind of like Rod Smith for the Broncos.

If I were him, I'd hit the 1,000 reception and 12,000 receiving yards marks and retire a Steeler at the end of the year.

He is 35 years old and played 14 years of hard nosed football.

I agree his career either over, or he bounces for one yr, then it's over.

I have no issues at all with Hines Ward and how he plays the game.

He plays a position that usually takes all the punishment and he was a rare breed of WR that liked to dish it back out.

I would loved to have had him in Denver all these years.

Our team could use some attitude like that.

No comments about the Redskins' freefall? Does Snyder give Shanahan another year if they finish in last place?

The media is curiously silent on this as well. Shanahan seems to be grasping at straws. He's got Turner and some of his old players and they still can't get a run game going. Compare that to the Texans have the second best rushing attack in the league. Kubiak did so much for Shanahan.

I didn't want to get into it with anyone here. Shanny's shanny, and he's working for the most impatient owner in the game, and possibly the slimiest. Shanny always brought in the best players he could regardless of cost and regardless of how that might impact the team the next year. Even when he drafted Lambchop, BM, Kuper, Shiftler and Doom, he still traded a pick for Javon Walker after dumping Lelie. If you're rebuilding, you dont' trade a two for a wr with a bad knee and even worse attitutde. I'm not gonna bother with another post-mortem here. He's the best coach Den has ever seen, and I don't think Fox will change that, though I think Fox is a perfect fit for this job right now.

I just don't see him as having the patience to sit a schaub or somebody and develop them, or suffer the pains of a first/second year starter unless a guy like Lambchop can somehow fall to him.

He'd still might be a good fit in a place like Harbaugh got where there was young talent, but the staff was incompetent. Chicago might fit. And that's not because of Cutler the individual but just that he's a talented player, and the team has some talent on both sides. Det's coach doesn't seem up to the chore. Thank God SD didn't hire him until their front office got rid of talent.

PFT is reporting that Schaub is out for multiple weeks with a foot injury and Schefter is apparently hearing it's a Lisfranc injury. That sucks for Kubes. He has one of the best teams in the AFC this year when healthy and he's built it right in a team that can run the ball but can also take to the air when necessary. Luckily they have a bye then Jax so two weeks to get it figured out.

If there was ever a time for Leinart to succeed, this is probably his best chance.
