The Buffalo Bills are releasing former first-round pick Aaron Maybin after trying unsuccessfully to trade the linebacker, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Drafted 11th overall in 2009 out of Penn State for his pass-rushing abilities, Maybin has yet to register a sack in 26 career games. Last season he was credited with only six tackles and has just 24 in his two-year career.

Gholston is very Harvey, but Okoye is a lesser Bunkley.

Playing next to Peppers and under Rod Marinelli, watch these guys blow it the eff up though lol.

Gholston looked Ok, no worse than Ayers.

I think they are thin at DT though, with Lovies system he needs guys to keep the LB's free on run downs and pressure on passing downs.

That said Pepper's will make a lot of guys look good, just like you said.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- In two short years, linebacker Aaron Maybin went from promising first-round draft pick to bust in Buffalo after the Bills waived him on Monday.

Having run out of second -- and third -- chances, Maybin's departure was announced in a one-sentence email issued by the Bills as they prepared to open their final week of training camp in suburban Rochester, and two days following a preseason-opening 10-3 loss at Chicago.

Coach Chan Gailey was not available for comment and expected to discuss the decision to part with Maybin following the team's evening practice.

The move did not come as a surprise to anyone, especially after Gailey had already described Maybin's status as "tenuous" in January.

Selected 11th overall in the 2009 draft out of Penn State, Maybin never played up to his potential as a dominating pass-rusher. In two seasons with Buffalo, he failed to register a sack or even break into the team's starting lineup in 27 career games.

He appeared in only 11 games last season, with the low point coming during a midseason stretch when he was listed as an inactive for five straight games.

Maybin had become such a notable disappointment that Bills fans had begun to refer to him as "Maybe."

Maybin struggled keeping his weight up, which made it difficult for him to outmuscle opposing offensive linemen. He entered the NFL listed at 250 pounds, but had reported to camp last month listed at 228 pounds.

Another consistent knock against Maybin was his ineffectiveness against the run, something that also led to coaches limiting his playing time

Despite his on-field struggles, Maybin was mostly upbeat and jovial. He would often sing and joke with his teammates as he walked off the field following practice. And he often celebrated with a fist-pump whenever he made a sack in practice.

That enthusiasm never translated into making an impact in games, where he saw most of his time playing on special teams.

Maybin spent much of the first three weeks of training camp working with second stringers. He failed to register a tackle against the Bears on Saturday.

The Bills were second guessed immediately after selecting Maybin, who entered the draft after three years at college, and with less than one full year as a starter with the Nittany Lions. A redshirt freshman, Maybin did lead the Big Ten with 12 sacks in only 10 starts during in his junior and final season.

Maybin becomes the latest in a string of disappointing first-round picks drafted by the Bills this past decade. It's a group that includes offensive tackle Mike Williams, who was cut after only three seasons after being selected fourth overall in 2002. Other first-round picks who have failed to make an impact in Buffalo included quarterback J.P. Losman and defensive tackle John McCargo.

The Bills' inconsistent drafting is among the key reasons they've gone 11 straight years without making the playoffs. That's tied with Detroit with the NFL's longest active drought.

Buffalo has now lost three first-round draft picks since the start of training camp. Besides cutting Maybin, the Bills lost safety Donte Whitner (selected eighth overall in 2006) to free agency, and traded receiver Lee Evans (13th in 2004) in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick to Baltimore on Friday.

The Bills have four players they selected in the first round left on their roster, including rookie defensive lineman Marcell Dareus, this year's pick out of Alabama.

Totally disagree. Lovie is REALLY, REALLY high on Henry Melton. Anthony Adams is a very solid NT. Mix in Paea, Okoye and that other Samoan guy for depth and I don't think it's a weakness at all.

...especially next to Peppers and Idonije

Injuries are quietly starting to mount at Raiders camp.

Wide receiver Louis Murphy will miss at least the season opener after undergoing surgery this week on either an injured hamstring or his groin. Days before the surgery coach Hue Jackson swore that Murphy wasn’t even hurt.

Starting cornerback Chris Johnson also underwent an undisclosed surgery this week. Jackson said on Monday that Johnson was only missing practice this week because he was a veteran getting time off.

“Dang, I wish I would have known,” safety Michael Huff told Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune. “Nobody tells me anything.”

The Raiders think Johnson could be back for the opener. If not, rookie third round pick DeMarcus Van Dyke could be starting.

The injury issues don’t end there. Safety Mike Mitchell hasn’t practiced in two weeks. Center Samson Satele was taken to the hospital Wednesday. Wideout Chaz Schilens is hurt once again. Wideout Jacoby Ford hasn’t returned yet from a broken hand.

There is an expectation in Oakland the team will build off last year’s impressive 8-8 record, but this team has a lot of questions. They removed a successful head coach and the offensive line is in huge transition. They also lost their best player (Nnamdi Asomugha) without remotely replacing him.

We know Yahoo’s Mike Silver thinks the Raiders are going to the AFC Championship, but a slide back to 5-11 irrelevance seems more likely.

If I were a GM, I would think about drafting Terrelle Pryor in the 5th round and would use him as a gimmick/special package QB (think Brad Smith) and start working him in at WR.

Dude is 6'6 233 pounds and runs in the 4.3 range....his athletic ability is worth the risk of a 5th round pick.

I've seen Ohio State line him up as a WR and seen him go over a defensive back to score a TD.

Roll the dice with a 5th round pick....low risk/high reward potential.
