Hey I use that stuff too, but I think mine's gone bad, does your reek like hairspray? The maca root aftershave is the **** though, it puts out my face fire.

A belgian coticule is all you'll ever need to maintain an edge on your straight. You can get them at www.thesuperiorshave.com

Beware if you get into straights though as they can become addicting. I own enough that if used in a rotation each straight would probably only see 3 shaves each year (And I shave everyday).

I've had a beard for a year and a half. Shaving sucks.

I have a Norelco electric one from about 4 years ago. At the time it was top of the line. What are the best electric ones out there today? I think I'm due for a new one.

Also, any tips for using an electric without making your neck kinda break out?

I started using a mug & brush about 3 years ago & love it. It changed shaving from a chore that I dreaded to something I actally enjoy. I usually rock 3 day stubble to a full beard & found shaving my neck to be a huge pain in the arse, I almost always got razor burn & redness. A friend of mine gave out the Art of Shaving line as groomsmen gifts & they're amazing. More expensive than most shaving products, but the pre-shave oil, shave soap and after-shave lotion are fantastic products that completely eliminate any irritation.

The Merkur safety blades work great in my old school razor.

I tell just about any female who will listen that these are the best father's day/bday or christmas gifts for the guys in their life that hate shaving.

Anybody try the Blade Buddy? Looks promising and money saver for the 3+ blade cartridge racket.

I like how they want you to feel guilty by saying "Throwing away the razo blade clogs landfills." Yeah, that is what we think of when tossing them away.

I remember this thread when Kaylore started it 6 years ago. Good bump.

I was told about this method a few years go and it seems to work when I remember to do it.

You need a backpack buddy that leaves you first. BTW, when this thread was started 6 years ago, were you even shaving?

This one of my oldest threads. Thanks for bumping this. Still using my merkur safety blades, though I keep a Mach 3 around for the chin and what not.

I use an old school safety razor - The gilette 1903 but there are plenty of options.

Combine with a proper blade - feather is the sharpest, I still use them a lot but have been experimenting a little more recently. Wilkerson Sword is a solid brand.

Safety razor will run you around $30 and the blades are 10 to 25c each depending on quantity/brand. I use each blade for 3 shaves(if done daily) but could go further I just love the feel of a very sharp blade and they are so cheap.

I now much prefer this to a straight blade. I have gotten proficient enough that the shave is just as close save a couple of ackward spots under my chin. It takes much less time than a straight, there is no hassle of stropping/sharpening blades. While I do think a freshly sharpened straight is hard to beat once it gets even a little dull there is a significant drop off in the shave and the replaceable blades are easily better.

How is the technique different with a safety razor compared to a 3+ blade setup?

I have used an old school brush and shaving soap in a mug for years. I have a new fangled razor with a broncos logo on the handle that the blades cost $20 for a pack of 4. But with the brush and soap I can make one pack of those razors last 4 or 5 months.

The other trick I read in a magazine (it's like an internet you hold in your hands and use your fingers to turn paper pages), was to dry the blades well when finished so I always wipe them off with my towel. It seems to have helped a little.

But the shave with a brush and soap is far superior to using cream and it doesn't irritate my face hardly at all whereas a shave with cream always tore me up.

I normally keep a goatee and only "shave" with a trimmer, unless I have a need to get cleaned up nice for some reason (client meetings, etc.). Only one girl has ever complained about the stubbly me.
