Apocalypto - 2006

As the Mayan kingdom faces its decline, the rulers insist the key to prosperity is to build more temples and offer human sacrifices. Jaguar Paw, a young man captured for sacrifice, flees to avoid his fate.

This movie will transport you back in time.
Incredible imagry, brutal realism.
Fantastic ending.

Just got Restrepo on Netflix today and watched it. Very moving.

Hit home for me because I have a buddy that manned the gun on the side of the choppers that fly out to outposts like that.

Needless to say, he doesn't talk about it and I don't ask.

We all just saw the trailer for the new movie... During the SB.

Cowboys and Aliens.

WTF?

It could be horrible.. or it could be pretty cool.
It depends on the script... the Special Effects look pretty good.

Who'd a thunk it... a Science Fiction/Western?

I see Kurosawa has been covered. Not nearly enough Americans know his stuff as he really is like the Beatles of movies in the sense that his influence is so widespread.

Also, "Baxter" is a crazy story about a boy and a dog that was really good. I've seen so so so many good foreign movies I can hardly remember them all. If you like suspenseful thrillers, the French version of "The Vanishing" was top notch. "Run, Lola, Run" was fun. "No Man's Land" was an amazing war movie, don't understand where the credit went there.

I thought "Take Me Away" was really good but apparently most disagree.

Right now I am getting into the "Trailer Park Boys" from Canada. That show slays the sheet outta me.

If you haven't seen it, check out Sanjuro, which is the sequel to Yojimbo. In some respects, it is a better film, and casts the original in a different light — especially with regard to the central character's attitude towards violence.

Hicks' whining is hilarious comic relief in what is still to me one of the most suspenseful movies I have ever seen. Fantastic movie.

I really like Apocalypto as well.

It covered a subject that had not been covered in American film before with characters that had to be difficult to pitch to investors. Its tough to get Americans to be interested in something so far removed from their experience as Mayan era natives. Its even tougher to have something approved that covers the story from a perspective that challenges liberal narratives....the idea that the Mayans were a brutal bunch who rounded up and killed less-organized natives isnt something that they want people to talk about.

Jaguar Paw is a fantastic hero, and his motivations cross cultural bounds.

i've seen it. you can tell it's low budget though.

i liked A Midnight Clear when it came out. haven't seen it in years though... it's another WWII movie that's been forgotten since Spielberg turned his sights on WWII. if i remember correctly, it was directed by "Peter" from The Brady Bunch.

speaking of Bill Paxton... he did an interesting film back in 2001 called Frailty. i'm sure alot of people heard about i when it was in the movie theaters, but it's fallen off the radar screen in the past decade. well worth another look if you've forgotten the story.
