Glad to see Restrepo and Valhalla Rising get some love.

Mother - Korean film this year from the director of The Host.

Dogtooth - Greek film this year (nominated for best foreign at the Oscars). Easily one of the most ****ed up movies you'll see, but fascinating and very clever.

Devil's Playground
- documentary following Amish tradition of Rumspringa, where teenagers who have lived there whole lives sheltered in the traditional life are allowed to live like the outside world for a few months to decide how to live there lives. Massive alcohol intake, drug use ensues.

Encounters at the End of the World
- documentary about the scientific communities working in Antarctica. Some great characters and eccentrics who have somehow found themselves living in one of the most remote area of the world.

Capturing the Friedmans - amazing documentary about a family's disintegration as the father and son face charges for sexually abusing students. One of the brothers was always filming the family even before the drama, so it's a rare documentary that has actual footage of almost every important conversation.

Harakiri - one of my favorite Japanese/samurai films. Classic revenge tale told in a very interesting way.

La Jetee
- 30 minute french film that became the basis of Terry Gilliam's "12 Monkeys." Not a traditional movie with moving images, but voiceover combined with a slideshow presentation of the images. It's well done, so it only takes a few minutes to adjust.

Best thing Clair Danes has done to this point. She was fantastic in this, as was everyone in it. Very important movie for those suffering from or dealing with Autism.

On last one EVERYONE should watch. It is a documentary - Touchng the Void
We just finished watching "Girl With The Dragon Tatoo", "The Girl Who Played With Fire", and "The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest" back to back. The only way to really do them right. The second two movies play much better if you watch all three in a row. These are currently all available from Netflix Streaming right now.

Big fan of IP Man as well, just watched it last week and will be watching IP Man II this week.

I'll toss out a couple we've caught in the last few weeks:

Arn: The Knight Templar Subtitled. The biggest budget ($30 mil) movie ever done in Sweden, too bad we can only get the International version here. It was actually done in two parts for the theaters in Sweden, then was shown as an 8 hour miniseries on TV. Similar to The Kingdom of Heaven from Ridley Scott (another great flick but only if you do the Director's Cut, otherwise it doesn't work well).

Dear Frankie Great date night flick about a woman on the run with her deaf son. She has told the boy for years his dad is in the merchant marine, but then the ship is coming to the town they live in. Has to find someone to "play" dad. Early flick for Gerard Butler, and one of the best things he has done. Scottish made indie flick.

Closet Land An early '90s flick from Amnesty International starring only two actors: Alan Rickman and Madeleine Stowe. Rickman is amazing in it. The "interview" of an author of children's books (Stowe) by an agent of The Government convinced it is subversive in it's message. Riveting and NOT an easy movie to get through.

Worlds Fastest Indian Anthony Hopkins in what he says is his favorite movie. The story of Burt Monroe from New Zealand who attempts to fulfill his life long dream to set a land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Feel good flick and a true story to boot.

A Very Long Engagement French film with Audrey Tautou (The Davinci Code, Amelie) starring as a young women relentlously looking for her fiance', who has disappeared from the trenches of the Somme during WWI. Subtitles again, but worth it. Amazing movie in HD, the cinematography is fantastic.

More later...

I'd add Hidden Fortress as essential Kurosawa, for Star Wars fans especially. And Ikiru, though it's very different from those other films. But, yeah, the whole catalog really is worth it.

Story:

City of God - I love epic non-linear storytelling.
Unforgiven - The best screenplay I ever read, it had a voice that in itself was its' own character.

Acting:

'Something Wild' - from '86 if not just for Ray Liotta's brilliant film debut.
'Boys Don't Cry' - how could you not like a chick named Swank?

Cinematography & Art Direction:

'In The Mood For Love' - Wong Kar Wai along with Aussie DP Christopher Doyle, and Art Direct Editor William Chang hit their visual peak here - camera movement, color, and music - and it has been copied by everyone before and since.
'Dark City' - awesome visuals.

Horror:

'Cure' - A Japanese film about a serial killer who uses hypnotism so people can commit these acts. What was really creepy is that the story was told to give you a feeling of how he used hypnosis - really disturbing atmosphere and story.
Let The Right One In - Original Swedish version.

Totally agree -- if you've never seen any Kurosawa movies, start with Rashomon then work your way up. He really invented so much of the "language" of film that we use today....

Then watch Seven Samurai, and realize how many movies are tributes, homages, or rip-offs (Magnificent Seven, Bugs Life, The Three Amigos, etc., etc.)
