Default Cool Movies that you'd Recommend

to complement Baja's thread,

What are some cool movies that you like that you'd recommend others see, that others have likely not seen or even ever heard of?

also, don't be BOB and recommend movies that everyone already knows.

Little Big Man (younger members here probably haven't heard of it)
The Long Good Friday
The Mouse that Roared

i'll think of a few more shortly and add them to this post.

I would also recommend Tao of Steve.

And if anyone is interested in German silent films, you must see G. W. Pabst's Pandora's Box, F. W. Murnau's Sunrise or Nosferatu, or Fritz Lang's Metropolis or M. Peter Lorre is fantastic in M.

Restrepo. The only real view of the war in Afghanistan. Highly recommended.

In Bruges, a recent film with Colin Ferguson also that other guy.

"Bruges" is a city in Belgium. They play two mafia guys on the lam in Bruges. It's sort of a black comedy, very droll like Reservoir Dogs dialog or something.

Rambo 4. Most people think I'm joking, but it's a good flick. Pretty heavy topics and realistic action( minus the bomb scene with the nuclear shockwave).

I have sat people down and made them watch it and everyone is a fan.

Give it a chance.

The Fountain is great. Darren Aronofsky's films are a trip.

Just saw that for the second time on Friday, that's a great movie.

I saw Felon recently, had not heard of it before watching it but it was pretty good.

A couple of other films I recommend if you are interested in seeing a characters descent into madness would be Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo or Aquirre: The Wrath of God. Klaus Kinski plays the lead in both of these films and I think he was bat**** crazy to begin with.

I've got Restrepo coming on Netflix. Will probably be here tomorrow. Can't wait to see it.

Also a Daniel Day Lewis movie many people might not have seen is In the Name of the Father. Great movie about the IRA in the 70's.

I'll have to add those to my list. For descent-into-madness flicks, I found these three both interesting and disturbing -

Kissed - Over the years, a young girl's romantic ideals about death blossom into necrophilia, the study of embalming and the most profound relationship of her life. (Canadian film, 1997)

Dans Ma Peau (aka In My Skin) - French film from 2002 about a woman's trip into self-mutilation and autocannibalism.

Repulsion - Italian film from 1965, directed by Roman Polanski, starring Catherine Deneuve - Left alone when her sister goes on vacation, a sexually repressed young woman gradually goes insane with surreal fantasies of seduction and rape. Fantastic imagery for the slow decay of a mind.

I'm a huge Paul Newman fan, so for the younger posters:

Cool Hand Luke

Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid

The Hustler

Slapshot, if for no other reason but this scene explaining the rules of hockey:
