We've mocked the concept for years but someone is actually trying it. This girl's school deemed it against the rules in their dress code for a student to have a nose ring. She claims it's part of her religion (The Church of Body Modification) and wants it defended.
Ivey describes the church as a non-theistic faith that draws people who see tattoos, piercings and other physical alterations as ways of experiencing the divine. "We don't worship the god of body modification or anything like that," he said. "Our spirituality comes from what we choose to do ourselves. Through body modification, we can change how we feel about ourselves and how we feel about the world." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_rel_piercing_church We used to call that a club. If I think I can connect with god through getting a hummer in the back of the class, can I organize and make it protected? Where does it stop? We need to reign that sillyness in. |

The Church of Body Mods is not a recognized religion. So this is over before it began.

This isn't the first such ludicrous claim, and it won't be the last. There are many people in America (more, these days than ever, it seems) who don't understand that with liberty comes responsibility. Part of the responsibility is not to tie up the courts with ridiculous bull****.

Is the "Church of Body Modification" any more whacked out that Scientology?
If you think about it, I bet we could come up with a pretty big list of "recognized" religions that are just as screwy as this one. |

I'm no expert, but all the religions I'm familiar with have their share of screwey beliefs (and believers). I'm not sure how a religion becomes officially "recognized" but I doubt the "Church of Body Modification" would look all that unusual when compared to most others. Then again, if the guy below shows up to plead their case, the argument above might go out the window. Last edited by TheProfessor; 09-17-2010 at 09:35 AM.. |

I like the one saying religious history. Basically they figure if it's a religion it should have been started by now lol. No new religions!!!!!!
What a joke. This is why I say schools should make no exceptions for religion. If you want religion in your school then go to a religious private school. |
