Default Chargers continue to unravel: Merriman refuses to show for camp

Shawne "roidman" Merriman told the San Diego Union Tribune that he will not report to training camp in time for the start of the Chargers training camp.

He will likely be joined by receiver Vincent Jackson and left tackle Marcus McNeill. Both players are expected to hold out into the regular season because they want long-term deals.

Merriman told the newspaper he is not looking for a new deal. He just wants insurances that the team is committed to him.

Im waiting for the green light to have a great year, he said. I need to know Im not going to be on the trade block every three weeks The question is do I have stability enough to go play football and not worry about the other things?

This is literally day to day how things progress, how things move, he said. I dont want this to be a distraction to my teammates. I dont want this to be a distraction to me. I just want to get something resolved soon and go from there. The bottom line is when I get back on the field I plan on doing what I do best, and that is playing."

The Chargers were expecting Merriman to show up and he needs to have a strong training camp and regular season to show he is fully recovered from a 2008 knee surgery. It seems like Merriman just wants to clear the air. With Jackson and McNeill wanting much more than that, it seems perhaps the Chargers and Merriman can quickly come to an accord.

Anything is possible, but it just doesnt seem Merriman -- who will make a lot of money on the open market next year if he has a big season -- will find it prudent to stay away for long.

You know a good way to have job security and stay off the trading block? Report to camp on time and prove you belong there.

Brandon Graham is headed to Eagles camp

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...o-eagles-camp/

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 29, 2010 10:25 PM ET

The Eagles have signed all their rookies before their veterans reported to training camp.

Defensive end Brandon Graham agreed to terms on a five-year contract, the Eagles announced. The No. 13 overall pick from Michigan, Graham ran with the second-team defense during minicamp season. He's the second highest draft pick to sign thus far.

Graham projects to help the pass rush right away, although he will have to prove he can be stout enough to help on clear running downs.

Saints sign Patrick Robinson

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...rick-robinson/

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 30, 2010 12:25 AM ET

Saints VP of communication Greg Bensel announced late Thursday night that cornerback Patrick Robinson agreed to terms on a five-year contract.

The Florida State product arrives in New Orleans Friday morning, which means he could get to the team facility and sign his contract in time to make an appearance at the team's morning practice. Robinson was selected with the final pick in the first round of the draft.

Once a running joke for the franchise, the Saints secondary has developed into a strength. Robinson has strong man-to-man skills and will battle for snaps behind starters Jabari Greer and Tracy Porter.

Texans reach deal with first-round pick Kareem Jackson

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...areem-jackson/

Posted by Michael David Smith on July 30, 2010 7:36 AM ET

The Houston Texans have their first-round draft pick in the fold.

Fox 26 in Houston is reporting that the Texans have reached an agreement with cornerback Kareem Jackson, the 20th overall pick in the draft.

The deal got done just in time for the Texans, who report to training camp today.

A three-year starter at Alabama, Jackson was viewed as one of the most NFL-ready players in the draft and is expected to start for the Texans as a rookie.

I think people are more upset by the numbers and the percentage of the overall salary cap that is allocated to rookies, but for some reason confuse this anger with "a lack of structure" when in reality it's not that at all.
Agreed pretty much, but what about how there is a larger percentage of the total contract now guaranteed compared to a few years ago?

For example, Cutler signed for a $48 mil contract with $11 mil guaranteed. 23% of the total was guaranteed. Probably most of the rookie contracts in 2006 were less than 33% guaranteed. Now we're seeing 50% or more guaranteed.

I don't have all the figures in front of me, but it sure seems like the percent guaranteed has escalated. So how far will it go without a formal structure instead of the informal structure you're talking about?

The Green Bay Packers are well positioned now for the start of training camp as Bryan Bulaga, the first-round draft pick, has signed his contract.

Bulaga, the 23rd overall selection, has put his name on a five-year contract, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Bulaga is the final draft pick to sign for the Packers and that ensures they will have all of their players in camp on time. The players are due to report to training camp today and the first practice will be held at 2 p.m. local time on Saturday.

Not only that, but by the time he comes back, they'll have drafted or picked up another player, and he'll be designated to fighting for a nickel spot again... I'll put money on it.

I heard Trent "Silverback" Williams was the first top 5 pick to sign. I am surprised the poverty pimp and the rest of the NAACP didn't make a play on the commish's comments on draft day.

Mike Iupati signs with 49ers

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...ns-with-49ers/

Posted by Michael David Smith on July 30, 2010 1:27 PM ET

Hours after the 49ers signed the first of their first-round offensive linemen, San Francisco has now signed its second first-round offensive lineman as well.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Mike Iupati has signed a five-year deal.

Iupati is a 331-pound guard from Idaho who was considered one of the most powerful run blockers in the draft.

The 49ers selected offensive tackle Anthony Davis with the 11th overall pick and Iupati with the 17th overall pick and expect both to start as rookies.

Anthony Davis, Navorro Bowman sign with 49ers

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...gn-with-49ers/

Posted by Michael David Smith on July 30, 2010 11:06 AM ET
The San Francisco 49ers have signed their first- and third-round draft picks.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that San Francisco has signed first-round pick Anthony Davis and third-round pick Navorro Bowman.

The 49ers moved up to the 11th overall pick to take Davis, a 6-foot-5, 323-pound offensive tackle from Rutgers.

Bowman, a linebacker from Penn State, dropped on draft boards because of off-field issues but is a talented player who should be able to contribute to the defense as a rookie.
