Now you're just baiting me, so an actual response clearly isn't worth it.

There's literally nothing about his skin color that makes it intrinsically important to that character beside one's memories of his physical appearance. And as shown by other posters, white people have played iconic historic roles that were not white either.

And personally, I think Dev Patel looks more like Sokka than Jackson Rathborne. And Dante Basco, who voices Zuko in the show, looks more like his animated character than McCarthey.
Totally agree with your bolded section. The girl who voiced Kitara could've pulled it off too. I think Sokka was cast as an after-thought to how they cast Kitara though. You really can't have the girl playing Kitara play her and have Dev play her brother.

As for Spiderman, yes it's that and more. It's also him battling through his awkwardness and so on. And no, a black character definitely doesn't take any of those issues away, but it's absolutely a massive change to one of the most recognizable characters in our culture... and for no reason whatsoever.

When they made a black Captain America, it wasn't Steve Rogers, so it was a good story. Doing something along those lines with Spiderman would be fine.

Change that to the pool team episode and I'll agree.

Does this mean he's strong and deeply sexy. I get so confused by men's sexist doubletalk.

Racists Demand Thor Boycott
White supremacist group hates the idea of Elba as Heimdall.
December 17, 2010

A white supremacist group is so peeved about black English actor Idris Elba playing the Norse mythological god Heimdall in Thor that they're urging a boycott of the upcoming Marvel movie.

The Guardian reports that the U.S.-based Council of Conservative Citizens has established a web site to allow other like-minded people to boycott the Kenneth Branagh-directed film because of the change in Heimdall's race.

Marvel told IGN during our visit to the Thor set that the Asgardians in the film are, as they are in the Earth X comics, actually aliens rather than gods. They visited earth in the ancient past, where their culture, language, beliefs and customs influenced the development of certain human civilizations, such as the Vikings.

As if a boycott by a few racists would actually hurt the Thor box-office.

I thought the ancient astronaut aspect of the movie that article revealed was the most interesting part, personally.

I wouldn't mind Donald Glover as Spider-Man. I think the character #1 has to look like a nerdy, average kid before anything. Tobey Maguire fit that role pretty well and the very least Glover looks it.

I don't really like Spiderman. I like Spongebob better.

A friend of mine was in NYC a few weeks ago and went down to Times Square. He ran into Spongebob, Patrick, Plankton, and Sandy. Sadly, he discovered that Patrick was an idiot and very pretentious. Sandy was cool, though, and they went and partied at the bubble for a while. So anyway, he brought back autographs for me from Spongebob and Plankton. Plankton's autograph is very tiny, however, and I can't actually see it. But they were in NYC so that proves it was the real Spongebob.

This thread was the first thing I thought of when I watched the first episode of this season's "Community". The opening scene was of everyone waking up/getting ready for their day and when they got to Donald Glover's room, he jumped out of bed wearing full Spiderman pajamas. Classic.

The movie studio producing Thor should put this group front and center, alerting the media that there will be a huge protest of the movie. It would be like the WKRP In Cincinnati episode, where the elderly group shouted "Hell, no-We won't go!" in the lobby of the station. It was the best publicity they had, to date...

So it is politically incorrect for a little white kid to relate to a white superhero?

As whites, apparently we're not allowed to derive pride from being white or to associate with white icons.

We're just supposed to feel bad about all the naughty things we've done.

And what's the big deal anyway? They added a black swan to the Swan Lake ballet.

What's that?

That's part of the original ballet created in the 1800s?

Oh....

Do you feel like Britta is way hotter this season for some reason?

Yes, I'm lobbying hard for a director's cut of the Zombie episode in particular.

That hasn't stop Hollywood from putting white actors in non-white roles. John Wayne as Genghis Khan or Mickey Rooney as Japanese neighbor in Breakfast at Tiffany's. And most recently with Angelina Jolie playing the real life Afro-Chinese-Cuban, Mariane Pearl. If white actors can play real life people of color, why can't non-whites play fictional white characters?

Casper Van Dien will never be confused for being Filipino, yet he played the protagonist role as the Filipino Juan Rico in Starship Troopers adaptation.

I think the people that that complain if it ain't white it ain't right, doth protest too much.
