True, but the single barrel is special, made for sipping and to enjoy.

Black label is what everyone drinks with coke or shoots.

I got away from the black label but love Gentleman Jack. Is the single barrel better? I've been wanting to try it but haven't yet.

Once the discussion moves into "pubic hair" then perhaps it's no longer "main page" material.

its whisky never whiskey that is not whisky neither is bourbon.

Glenlivet is very nice. I prefer a peaty malt tho like laphroig or the majority of islay whiskys

personally tho if you're going for a whisky as a present i'd go with a glenfiddich or glenmorangie you can get some nice special cask glenmorangies that are matured in wine port sherry or brandy barrels which are very nice

It is good, really smooth and easy to drink.

But the Gentleman Jack is good as well.

Here you go-

Bourbon-Blanton's
Rye Whiskey-Crown Royal (to be fair I'm not a huge fan of ryes anyway so somebody else may be of more help here)
Scotch Whiskey-Laphroiag 15 year single malt or Talisker 10 (or if you're so monitarily inclined the 18 is preferable). Laphroiag is peaty and smokey whereas the Talisker is more in keeping with the American idea as to what a good Scotch whiskey should be. Me? I prefer the Laphroiag 15 to all others. It is simply the best whiskey around and at a very competitive price.

If he drinks scotch, hit me up with your budget (low$35----high$limit) and I'll give you the info. Don't even think about buying anything under $35 unless you want to piss off a scotch drinker.

That's the beauty of scotch, there's something for everybody. The tragedy of American scotch is that it is defined by blends such as Johnny Walker, Barrel Swill. And usually for a premium.

I like that I can get the Laphroaig 15 yr for under $100, usually around $70-$80 (depending on if I buy in VA, DC or DE).

If the dude likes bourbon, you can not go wrong with Knob Creek. Just absolutely can not... Woodford is good, too, as someone else commented. Its a little too woody for my taste, but is well received by most.

I think I'm gonna go with the Blanton's. It's been mentioned a couple of times.

A good friend of mine that is a whiskey collector has told me that Blanton's is his favorite American whiskey. He recommends Single Barrel or Special Reserve.

Any recommendations?
There's three kinds of whiskey (four, but Canadian doesn't really matter here).

For Irish, I'd say Jameson Special Reserve, about $40:

For American (bourbon), I'd say Jack Daniels' Gentleman Jack, about $48:

Scotch, if (and only if) he drinks Scotch, it's tougher because there are so so many. I'd go with a premium version of a classic like Chivas Regal, their 12-year old is about $52

I see now it's bourbon only ... I'd go with Gentleman Jack, but there's a couple others:

The Jim Beam premium label is Knob Creek, about $65

And there's always Maker's Mark, about $40

Chivas is "SWILL". A playboy scotch, if you will. I guess if you advertise enough, you can sell **** in a box with a bow.
