Dunno if anyone has mentioned it but Shiner Bock is nothing short of fantastic. They also make a good Heevevison

Meh, I wasn't a fan of Shiner Bock. I thought it tasted like a soda I left open all day.

The Spoetzl (SP?) brewery aka the Shiner brewery used to be one of my absolute favorites. I practically lived off Shiner Bock through college as it was both cheap and delicious.
After college I discovered some of their other beers and have to say their dunkleweizen was one of the top beers for both taste and the ability to drink more than 3 or 4 in a sitting. In the past year or so I have found that the Bock has been a little hit or miss (flat and over maltiness - kind of meeting ksBronco's description). I'm not as fond of their other beers as I used to be either and they're not producing the dunkle anymore (as far as I can tell). I don't know if they've just had some shady batches going out lately or what. |

This is my latest beer I've tried. It's there "summer" beer, but I'm pretty sure this summer beer can kick the **** out of most summer beers.

Dogfish's Sahtea. It is very interesting since it is brewed with Chai and Juniper Berries. Light Ale color with white head. You can taste the Chia as it goes down and Juniper provides a bitter aftertaste. It is based on 9th century Finnish recipes so it explains the addition and the taste. If had traditional old old school beer and liked them you will enjoy this. For modern beer taster it might be a little to different to enjoy.

Meantime Traditional London Porter. The brewery claims this is the traditional porter recipe that Americans enjoyed during the time of the Revolution, so take that for what it is worth. Their site http://www.meantimebrewing.com/london_porter.html
Pours a dark semi clear brown with a nice head. Your first sips gives you the strong taste of burnt/roasted malts that make up this beer. That flavor is quickly replaced with smokey sweetness. Beer-advocate gives this brew an average A rating, I am leaning more to B/B+ range. Not bad, but there are better English porters out there. If you feel like something different I would pick up the 750 ML for evening. |

Two coworkers of mine have been in Merrimack, NH all week and today they went and toured the Budweiser plant and they got a sneak peak at a wheat beer coming out in the beginning of October. They were given a sample and they said it was really good. They had to call me right away and tell me about it. I'm curious to give it a taste.

Southern Tier's iniquity Imperial Black Ale. This ale is stout dark and without the heaviness folk would associate with a stout or porter. At first I felt it was just average but it need to breath and warm up a little to get a nice robust flavor. I think I like this better then then mokah from last night.
Also had Stone Brewery 2007 Golden Medal winning Levitation Ale for lunch. It darn good, better then Arrogant Bastard Ale which I put as one of the best beers in the country. Golden with the hoppyiness you expect from Stone this beer rocks, especial with slight citrus vibe it give off. |

I didn't realize it was under the Bud "Light" label. I wound up actually liking the Bud Light Lime, but when is InBev gonna make a big bold American beer? The American Ale, was okay, but I thought they played it too safe.

A few beers I've tried as of late...
Sam Adams Noble Pils -- A very drinkable beer, but the one I had seemed a little too carbonated. I like the bitterness of the hops in this one. New Belgium Ranger IPA -- A friend recommended this one saying it was the best IPA ever. I bought a six pack and I'm going to have to disagree with him. It had an off putting flavor to it that I can't really describe right now. Should have wrote it down as a drank them. (So far my favorite IPA is from Odell's). Schalfly Coffee Stout -- I like this one for a change up to other beers. It's an oatmeal stout brewed with coffee (obviously) and I think they did a great job bringing the two together. I don't imagine someone would like this beer if they didn't like a good strong cup of coffee. Tallgrass Pale Ale -- Not very good. If they were to use some more hops it might make it better, might. What do expect out of the Manhattan though? |

My last 4 reviews- most it over at BF, but enjoy
Lost Coasts Brewery 8 Ball Stout. An American Stout with slight nutty flavor. Not very strong or overpowering, a simple bit. It not bad, but ain't special. Worth a purchase if looking for something different. Bell's Consecrator Doppelbock Beer, usually I can not stand this brew of beer, but Bell does it again. A little bitter with malty aftertaste it well worth the purchase. I couldn't drink it every week, but if you see it go pick a 6 pack. Also Flying Dog's Raging B!TCh. "Belgian" IPA. Meaning a American IPA infused with Belgian hops. Very hoppy finish and bitterness. It their 20th anniversary beer, and if you are fan of IPA and Belgian you should check this on out. Terrapin Beer Company's Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout. One word - heavy. It pours very black and comes across heavier them most Oatmeal Stouts. There isn't any real taste of coffee, because the coffee is added so late in the process. If you are looking for a heavy beer this is the one for you. |

I've boycotted Flying Dog since they vacated downtown Denver for the East Coast. I probably need to get over my petty home town snobbery and give it a try. Flying Dog makes good beers and Old Scratch was always a good stand by.

It far from my favorite brewery, it rates just above average in my mind. I recommend if you have a chance to pick something up from Stone Brewery, Dogfish., Bells or Bear Republic if you are looking for great craft beers. Bell is especial on hot streak right now.

A great brewery in Indiana is Three Floyds' out of Munster near Chicago. They are an exceptional brewery with all above average beers IMO. Their staples are Alpha King (American Pale ale), GumballHead (American Wheat), Robert the Bruce (Scottish Ale), and Dreadnaught (Their Signature IPA). They offer some outstanding limited offerings like Dark Lord (Russian Imperial Stout), Behemoth (Barleywine), and Drunk Monk (Hefeweizen). I have not had an average beer from this brewery. |

Just because I love to share - from my posts on BF beer thread
Red Hook's Limited Release 8-4-1 Expedition Ale. A strong Brown Ale with a hint of honey. It pours a muddy brown and gives off a nice wood odor. As you drink it you can taste the infusion of honey that off sets the oak wood chips that it was brewed with. It nice brew and worth the investment. Please note that does have 9.5% ABL that kinda sneak up on you. The yards General Washington Tavern Porter. The claim to fame is they use Washington porter recipe brewed with the molasses (something common in the colonial period brews). It pours a black/brown with hint of sweetness to the smell. Goes down smooth and mocha sweet. Overall it good brew and worth picking up a six pack. Southern Tier Heavy Weizen. It was extremely well put together wheat beer. It pours cloudy (like a wheat should) and has a strong smell of citrus. I kinda of wish that I had some oranges to complete it as I drank it. If you like wheat brew then this one will right down you're alley. Talking about Arrogant Ba$tard, just opened Breckenridge Small 471 Batch IPA. Very hoppy and comes across as Ba$tard clone. If you see it, pick it up. Collaboration Not Litigation Ale from Avery and Russian River Brewing. It a strong Belgium Dark Ale. In one word - yuck. There are some that might like this style (it got a B+ on beeradvocate) but it my mind it isn't good. It's pours dirty brown and you can smell the citrus in it. The taste come off as hard on the tongue with an aftertaste. Maybe I was in the wrong mood for this, but I will not give it another chance. Brewdog's Tokyo. First it is a barely wine, not a beer. It comes in very high ACL of 18.9%. So it is not something you down by yourself (unless you are a hobo). It a barely wine/beer that needs to be shared between friends (like 5 or 6 for 12 oz bottle). Comes across very sharp and sickly sweet, pours dark brown. The taste lingers and stay with you. Overall it very complex and interesting brew, but it is a sharing beer for folks that want to indulge in something outside of the norm Full Sail Pale Ale. A nice light ale. Pours a dark golden in color with slight earthy hop smell. It goes down smooth and light. It's good summer brew. Pike Stouts - Extra Stout- A nice dark Foreign/Export stout. Pour black with light tan head. An aroma of brown sugar and coffee when it's pours. Goes down smooth and has no aftertaste. It's good brew and worth the investment. It wasn't the greatest stout as clerk at the store claimed but it is something that should be on the go to list for the stout drinker Boulder Beer Company - Obovoid - Oak-aged oatmeal Stout. Pour black with tan head. You catch the hint of the oak and underlying oatmeal. A little bitter going down, which is common with this style. At the end of the sip, there is a little aftertaste of malts also common with this brew. Overall a great Oatmeal Stout, the oak chip bring an earthly taste to the beer that some won't like. It worth getting if you like hearty oatmeal stout. Last edited by elsid13; 06-08-2010 at 02:26 AM.. |
